I’m currently on the hunt for two yo-yos: A fun undersized throw (looking at the CLYW Minitee ) A solid competition-focused yo-yo (interested in the Wildless, but open to suggestions)
My budget is flexible but ideally under $100 each, and I live in Europe, so shipping/pricing can be a factor.
Any recommendations or thoughts on the ones I mentioned would be super appreciated — thanks in advance!
Yo there are kind of like two categories that contradict each other. Fun and undersized with minitee for a reference is like the opposite of competition focused. Making a yoyo that small is kind of by definition going to nuke the performance. There are probably options that try to thread that needle bc most high level competitors would be amazing with like any yoyo. I recommend you cop a super dope and fun competition yoyo like Capriccio by etc for like 55$ and then save a bit and cop like dingo 2 by one drop for a fun small yoyo.
Oooo shoot I totally misread the op ooops! I thought you meant one yoyo my bad uh poor reading comprehension Teehee i had just woken up. Uhhh yeah I’ll keep my recs the same tho.
For Solid Competition yoyos there are a lot available. My favorite straight competition throw is an unprld recognition. It spins forever, is super controllable, and is catchable enough for modern tricks. It is no longer in production though so it may be harder to find. There is an updated version, but I have not yet tried it so I can’t say if it lives up to the recognition
Other great options that I have played are:
YYfriends shine
Disyoyo Sybil: Really incredible all around yoyo with an incredible feeling in play. Other yoyos may be a bit more competition focused though
Iyoyo Hydra NXG
Sense Fake two Piece
Yoyos that I haven’t played but have heard amazing things about:
Wilderness 7075
YYF Horizon 2025
Duncan Evolve
I have heard good things about the wildless, but it isn’t praised as much as the three above that I have listed.
I feel very confident that you will enjoy any of the throws listed above. I would suggest looking at shapes and colorways and picking the one that looks coolest to you.
Minitee is a goofy throw although in a good way. That being said if you want it to be fun and useable i wouldn’t quite recommend it. Reboot and Rebirth by OneDrop are both really good though, as is the Capstan 22 if you can find one (it is rare, however).
In terms of competition, i feel that that is kind of a matter of preference. What are your favorite yoyo shapes? Mass? Width?
Ps: the post immediately before me is great. The wilderness 7075 and Duncan Evolve are both amazing and relatively cheap.
I quite liked the barracuda by Duncan but I don’t like organic yo-yos as much. I haven’t played with a lot of yo-yos. I used to own a wizard by one drop but I disliked it a lot same with terrarian. But the Duncan barracuda is by far my favourite playing yoyo and my only problem with some of the yo-yos @Blieske mentioned is the shape looks really different from the barracuda but I don’t know.
The barracuda is a midschool (2012-2016) design. It was released during a time where companies were adding a lot of midweight to their yoyos primarily influenced by the CLYW Chief.
The barracuda can be used to complete modern competition tricks, but is outdated in terms of specs. Modern competition yoyos are usually at least 45 mm wide and often wider. If you are looking for something more similar in design language to the barracuda, the One Drop top deck is among the best of the best from a similar time period as the barracuda. If you are looking for something that bridges the gap between the past and the present, the Hydra Nxg, the yoyofficer vector and the CLYW leaf have the specs but maintain the midweight feel in play.
I didn’t recommend this yoyo in my last post, because it is more of a high performing organic than it is a competition yoyo, but the Sense Next journey is also fantastic and shares some of the design language of the barracuda.
Not that I have noticed. Every once in a while I need a second attempt, but since it doesn’t bleed speed off from dragging pad on string, I find it has more “zip” on return than it used to doing the same tricks running Snow Tires(skin the gerbil, matrix, cold fusion, etc). I also swapped them in my Glacier Express and WOW they transformed that thing.
I have also been running a G2 Ripper bearing, which is a center track concave
I would just suggest Summer Tires and a “fat” string to get a good mid ground, those Snow Tires really seem to be “too generous” with the amount of material that is exposed, they stick out maybe .25mm, where as summer tires are flush
I really like the Yoshicuda X and the Chobi Gorilla, both look super fun and right up my alley. I previously mentioned that I live in Europe, though, so shipping is a big factor for me — it can really bump up the final price or limit what I can get.
If there are any similar options that are easier to get over here, I’d love to hear them!
Perhaps you could find a suitable Yoshi or Chobi on the BST or even start a BST saying you’re looking for one and you may get one at a good price and then the shipping wouldn’t hurt as much. As long as the seller is willing to ship it. It’s definitely worth a shot.
