i have a bearing that i can’t get to play consistently. id rather brick it and try to use it as a fixie bearing with my @Slestak75 modded se’s. what’s the best way to lock up a bearing, super glue?
Hoping to see answers to this. I’m also curious if there is anywhere to buy “locked” bearings. Not sure I have a bearing I’m willing to lock up yet. LOL!
You can buy bearing “blanks.”
As for locking a bearing, you can use super glue, or you can get bearing locks from Layer Infinity, or someone who has a 3D printer.
I imagine hot glue would work, and you could cut it down flush with a sharp knife
I like the idea of hot glue as you could also use a heat gun to get it back out. Maybe thread locker would work. Anything you have handy pretty much. Fill it with silicone like a response pad. Melt solder into it. Jam a bunch of dirt into it and put the seal back on it lol.
nice tks for the answers. good points about hot glue. i think I’ll start there so i have some margin for error
Also if you wanted to take it apart sized C and you have a crown cage, you could order 1.6-1.7mm balls and replace the 1/16 balls. The larger balls should lock it with however many you can fit evenly spaced. With a 10 cage 5 should be the minimum.
Epoxy works for bricking a bearing, or take it apart and use just the inner race. Or use something to lock the inner and outter race.
Ahh yes sand filed bearings are the best bricked bearings
Tiny rocks for tiny rollers, ahh yes, brings back vivid memories of face eating pavement while skateboarding.
Quite honestly… a locked bearing is a locked bearing. So finding the easiest most cost effective way of locking said bearing should be the goal. One method isn’t going to lock it better than another… it just arrives there in a different way. Regardless of the method you’ll need to clean the bearing of the old grease/ oil so the fixing agent can actually fix to the surface. Removing the shields is recommended, but either way, super glue works its way into the bearing very easily, as it’s fairly liquid. It locks the bearing up and never lets go. Of course superglue can glue fingers together so be careful. Acetone (nail polish remover)breaks down superglue if you do happen to glue yourself together. It really doesn’t get much easier or cheaper.
This is fair however I have found that some glues will release after some time and the bearing will become semi responsive again. I have had great luck with steel epoxy. The steel particles add a little grit to it which gets into the ball bearings and binds everything up even before setting. Then it bonds permanently.
Also fair.
Quite honestly… this is all fair, however… dirt from my yard is free. (All in good fun )
Dirt also holds the added benefit of… no need to clean the bearing first.
I’m sure a bit of Play-Doh would do the trick!
I was actually just thinking that. It dries really hard. I know because I’ve stepped on my kids dried creations.
I once stepped on a “Spike Trap” my sisters made> blood was shed.
