Let's talk Mechanical Keyboards

I was typing at 10 WPM in October last year. I think I’m making pretty good progress.

Keyboard noob here. Always just had a basic keyboard, but I’ve been looking for a decent mechanical one for the home office recently. So many options I honestly have no idea where to start.

I think I’d prefer something compact since i’m so used to the mac keyboard. Was thinking tenkeyless or a 60%. I use arrow keys a lot so would like those in place, and I would like to be able to use it both on home PC and work Mac. Do I need a specific type to switch up the Mac cmd button?

Any suggestions brands or specific models I should check out?

I’d recommend Vortex Race if you need arrow keys and Vortex POK3R if you can do without them. Both have multiple layers so you can rewrite the layout for Mac / PC and switch on the fly. (Also possible to do in software on your individual machines, but tidier if you do it in keyboard)

Much like throws, mechanical keyboards are made by companies in smaller runs, so preorders are sometimes necessary, or BST like Reddit’s MechMarket

You’ll also need to decide if you want clicky keys, silent clicky (tactile) keys, or a linear response (no clicky keys)

Short answer, linear if you game, clicky if you live / work alone, tactile if you work with others or type while on the phone / video chat.

A lot also depends on your budget.

Good to see some other ortholinear humans in here. Here is my current madness on my fun set up. My work keyboard is sadly very boring. Please excuse my dirty keeb, keycaps desperately need a bath

Er, what specifically needs an explanation?

Haha just a joke. I meant that that’s cool that someone sells a cap set with your name on it.

Well, my online handle is mentioned (that was nice of them) because I designed that Mercury Rocketeer keyboard for MassDrop. I don’t know who “Oh, Keycaps!” is, but it looks like they bought some Rocketeers from MassDrop and are (were) re-selling them.

That’s cool! Ya I just saw it on the at website.

This thread blows me away. I really had no idea about the mechanical keyboard market. I have a Logitech K840 which I like quite a bit (aside from the spacebar) but it just doesn’t really compare to any of these. Pretty cool.

@YoYoExpertGarrett I recommend a Keychron K6. I have been using mine for a while now and it’s a really good standard for the price. I really like it.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Kbdfans KBD67 MkII v2?

I just purchased one and I’d like to know what your thoughts are I’d you’ve used one.

@ThePants, how does this keyboard work out for a touch typist? I get the feeling that because the rows aren’t staggered that I would be constantly hitting the wrong keys.

Thanks Glen, I actually really like the look of that one. I was looking through mechincalkeyboards.com earlier and picked out a few favorites only to realize they were all out of stock lol. I’ll probably go with the keychain K6 or the Ducky One 2 I found online.

you’d be amazed what you can adapt to in a couple hours, I prefer ortholinear layouts and find them faster and more comfortable, especially for gaming, but I have absolutely no trouble on traditional staggered layouts either

What is it that makes them faster? Is ortholinier more natural for finger movement?

I don’t think I can say universally that it would be faster for everyone, just faster for me. There is less distance between certain movements on a othro board. Mainly I just think that keys larger than 1u are a waste of space and stabilizers are all bad and sound like poop
