The unadulterated version of the pick from 2A Tuesdays
Let’s be real here Garrett: there’s a spectrum of risk in those things you listed and alcohol is clearly the most dangerous one there.
Alcohol is addictive. Craft pickles are not. Sugar is addictive. Cutting sugar cold turkey as an addict could give you headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Cutting alcohol cold turkey as an addict could give you life threatening seizures; hospitals carry beer for admitted alcoholics in case they go into withdrawal . Your body sees alcohol as a poison, not so for pickles or sugar.
Improperly preserved anything could get you sick.
To get salt poisoning from pickles you’d have to eat an obscene amount. Like, subsist on nothing but pickles for a day or two.
This is not to say I don’t think this thread belongs here, nor am I advocating for any sort of prohibition. I myself love craft beer, but your comparison is just not right. I have no issues with this thread but please do not handwave dangers alcohol poses. Alcoholism is extremely common for a reason and many people are not able to enjoy in moderation due to its addictive properties. Craft pickles and sweets are not “just as likely to kill you if not taken in moderation”. I agree that Blimpin coming into this thread to pick a fight was silly (especially the way they went about it), but your response was nearly as silly.
Had to get that off my chest, sorry.
Anyways, I live in the Bay Area and we have a pretty good selection of microbreweries around us. My favorite is probably Alpha Acid Brewing in Belmont, CA. There’s also a really dope cidery in San Mateo that opened relatively recently, Redwood Coast Cider. I thought cider couldn’t get any better than Downeast or Citizen’s Lake Hopper but RCC proved me wrong; I love that they’re all dry ciders, super crisp. Been on a big sour kick most recently, had a lot of really tasty ones when I was in Gainesville end of last October.
Thought it was pretty clear I was being facetious… but I’ll just go ahead and quote myself (as you already quoted) to avoid any further confusion.
And now to get back on topic (hopefully for the rest of the thread, but I somehow doubt it) - the Bay Area does have a pretty good beer scene. Last time I went was visiting my sister out there. She was living near Japan Town and there was a great beer bar within walking distance with a huge selection of local beers… It’s been years and I can’t recall the name, but I got to try quite a few locals. Also spent some time at Mikkeller which was a treat!
Since you’re into sours and in the Bay Area definitely go check out Mikkeller (if you haven’t already). They have some fantastic sours and spontaneously fermented beers.
I’m not much of a drinker but I have tried a few lambics and framboise that were really good.
I’ve said all I needed to above so I won’t be diverting from the topic at hand anymore. I did not pick up you were being facetious, but that makes a lot more sense now…
I haven’t been to the Mikkeller out here but I was very privileged to visit Copenhagen with my family last summer; we went to one of their bars and it was fantastic! I don’t make it up to SF all that often but next time I’ll have to check it out!
Looks good! I liked it when I tried it. Bourbon is great stuff. I’ve tried some of the fancy stuff but my favorite is still Angel’s Envy…which is still a little pricey, but there are definitely pricier options.
@rumstove I’m actually located in Kentucky and live down the road from angels envy. Prices actually aren’t too bad here! If you ever get the chance the bourbon trail in KY does a lot of touring and you always get free samples .
Ugh I’m jealous. Are the tours open now? The last I saw some tours were on hold due to Covid, but that was a couple months ago though so perhaps they started up again.
Doing bourbon tours in Kentucky is lots of fun. My dad and I went to Buffalo Trace over Christmas, was super cool and he picked up a bottle of eagle rare for a pretty good price!
I think most are still closed right now. But they are a lot of fun when they are open!
@Isaac yea we always have a lot of fun going on them! It’s always cool to see the slight differences in each of the distilleries. My dad and I both really like basil Hayden but we also love buffalo trace because they own Old Rip Vanwinkle now.
Strawberry Milkshake IPA sounds amazing
I went in skeptical and it was amazing. I’m garbage at describing beer/wine flavors but I will say I’ll be keeping an eye out for this.
Good Pilsner. Haven’t tried that particular Amaro, but love a good digestif. Making my way through a box of Underberg currently.
Oooh those steaks look good… And that BrewDog looks even better!
