It’s all relative to the era you’re referring to… I got my Peak Winter Green edition from a store (the UK branch of YoyoNation) in early 2010. I bought it with a 30% discount, paying €63 if I remember correctly, and that’s because they were the last two I had and they’d been unsold for over a year. At that time, anyone who wanted a Peak had ample opportunity to own more than one. It wasn’t rare or sought-after. It was just starting to look old.

This is very accurate, and applies to a lot of the yo-yos which are desperately sought after now. There was a lot of hype for peaks for years, but by the end it had massively died down.
There’s a reason I’ve sold peaks, a wooly Markmont, a galactic goose, a canvas and multiple anti-yos for $100 or less back in the day: that’s all people would pay, because they weren’t sought after then

Right now, I’m just waiting for the Atdesinglab x CLYW p3ak. It looks like it might be an undersized model, and I’d be really disappointed if I couldn’t even try to check out, just like the Legacy Peak.

Been there. I would prefer it if all yoyos were more accessible; but that’s just not possible. Life goes on. The majority of people want a minority of products; but it sounds like Steve primarily wants to make new products. I’d feel the same way in his position. Injecting a degree of artificial scarcity into the helps keep people hooked no doubt, but you can’t stop people from transforming ‘rare’ into meaning ‘worth a lot of money’.

I think the legacy peak is pretty cool, they should just add it into their normal production rotation. Og Borealis as well I have 2 of those and I’d buy another. They should both just be normal yoyos CLYW makes. I get the exclusivity angle, fine, don’t make 28s again, right? Also it doesn’t HAVE to be machined by OD does it? It does make this one special but like, a normal regular style release of legacy peaks would be fire, even if Caribou used their usual machine shop(s?)

They can run their business as they like. There will always be the have and have nots and people flexing their 1of 4 yo-yos. Hell I have some rare colorways just like most of us. But drops like this are unsustainable in the long run. Look at sports cards and TCG cards. My kid just wanted to play a fun game with his favorite anime. Good luck finding One Piece cards that aren’t being scalped. Lotteries are the only way I can think of to level the playing field. I have never had luck with MFD and then Ray told me about a lottery for people who had not been able to get in on a drop. 8 people entered. No scalpers or bots.

Full disclosure: I won that lottery. I get a special yoyo without hassle and hard feelings. If I hadn’t won it I would be a bummed but I wouldn’t have hard feelings for the company.

MFD is kind of it’s insulated thing within the community, there’s MFD fans having their fun with their drops and then there’s everyone else. It’s easy for people who aren’t into that to ignore, but everyone wants a Peak.

I would put my name and 100% money down for a OD machined pre-order (knowing that lead time would likely be 6-12 months).
I would also buy a mass-market version that wasn’t a “modernized” design. It could be otherwise tweaked in some way to maintain differentiation.
I think the message is clear that there is no desire to see the Legacy Peak or anything similar overshadow new and upcoming projects. Hopefully at least some of those are in the narrow, high-wall category. I think the rapid sell-outs of the Everyday and ongoing interest in the Beater make the case for this type of yo-yo.

It’s a good yoyo! Good design stays good, there’s a reason I still play Mario 64. I throw mine and it’s different from most of my collection, I really like how it plays and I would want a less special one to, yknow, bring out of the house. I’ll definitely wanna get at least 2 P3AKs though because I think that will fill the legacy-peak-sized hole in my “leaving the house with a yoyo” holster!

This is exactly the point I wanted to make. I just want the yoyo itself, I don’t care about the exclusivity. I’d love to try the specs intended for release, and I feel that everyone should be able to experience it.
But I do think that the micro drops are a business model that’s become a frustrating standard. It was nice when I was able to buy a Chief from YYE 15 years ago. (Which I still own)

I believe it. That’s the only reason I would buy one. I am 100% prepared for it not to perform the same as any of the 20 years worth of designs that have been introduced since. That’s the attraction.

It’s actually pretty powerful, it has this kind of “triangular” rim shape that reminds me of the OD Rainier, but less exaggerated.

I’ve no idea but I have played the Peak 2 and it’s super different from that. Bouncy? It feels somehow heavy and light at the same time. It’s hard to describe but it has very high “throw it again” factor. The high walls are fun!
