Are bots ruining yo-yo drops lately?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone else has noticed something weird going on with recent drops for yo-yos like the Legacy Peak, Summit 2, or even the 67 Laguna.

I used to be able to snag rare yo-yos every once in a while, but at this point, getting a Legacy Peak feels completely impossible. Honestly, it feels like this whole trend started right after the One Drop US drop—that was the last collectible throw I actually managed to score.

Lately, whenever a drop goes live, I’ll refresh the page right on the dot, only for it to immediately show “out of stock.” Or if I’m lucky enough to add it to my cart, by the time I wait 10–15 seconds for my bank’s verification code, it’s already sold out.

I know how drop culture works, and I’m no stranger to grinding for rare releases, but lately it feels like something else is at play. Are people using checkout bots now? I’ve never seen stuff sell out literally the exact second the page refreshes.

It used to be that my friends and I would talk about who managed to grab one and who missed out, but now, virtually no one in my group can buy these drops through official sites anymore.

What’s your take on this? Has anyone else been running into the same issue? Also, if anyone has dealt with this exact issue and actually found a way to beat it, I’d be super grateful if you could share how you did it.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

There were factors at play that could cause yoyo’s to be checked out early. I emailed Steve about this, literally this weekend. It should/will be fixed and it is looking like he already fixed it for the upcoming lowercase p3ak drop.

Very important note/distinction: I am not saying they were being checked out early. I am only saying that they COULD HAVE been checked out early. I am also not aware how they would have handled any yoyo’s checked out early (i.e., if they cancelled orders that were checked out early or not).

What we call in the botting world: a “backdoor”

Before it was fixed…

I think it is just a collision of massive demand, limited supply and technical issues that are common, but much more obvious in these fraught situations.

All I can really say is that it is possible for a regular human to buy these yo-yos just by showing up at the appointed time and going through the normal processes.

I mean I’m still shocked I got a first release Summit 2 in the color I wanted.

Maybe it’s just… more people are into throwing now? Social media has a good reach, and not everyone posts, so maybe they really are just getting into throwers hands, but they just don’t post about it.

Has anyone seen these popping up for scalper prices? I have BST here muted, and I don’t follow Facebook groups or discords

I think the black hardware version was available for quite a while (hours?). The silver sold very quickly, but there were comparatively few silver and purple.

The Legacy Peak is going for around $250–$350 right now on the aftermarket, just because nobody can actually score one off the site.

A pale blue S2 was posted for ~original cost yesterday, but another one was (allegedly) sold for $300 plus on eBay.

Yeah i know i bought with purole sides

FWIW, I have one with silver. Just bought it with PayPal from my Verizon phone tethered desktop.

Speaking as someone who has successfully snagged every drop you’ve mentioned… Legacy Peak/P3AK/multiple Summit 2’s… I always can’t help but laugh anytime someone mentions “I didn’t get one! It HAS to be bots!”

Nah. Very honestly, you just have to know how to play the game. I saw A LOT of people saying “When I clicked refresh at exactly 10:00:00, it showed SOLD OUT already!” Well… no lol

Steve explained this phenomenon. Because of how Shopify currently works, he has to manually update the inventory from 0 to however many there are in stock at the exact time of the drop. This takes a few seconds, and will lead to it appearing as “sold out” very briefly to being in stock a few seconds later… so what happened was a LOT of people just saw the “sold out” and gave up. BUT, if you kept refreshing, you’d know that they went into being stock, and were able to check out. Lots of these people who encountered the “sold out” at the exact drop time were the ones claiming there were bots lol

It’s also not enough to know that though… some people have gotten mad at me sharing this because it creates more competition lol… but you HAVE to have Shopify setup for checkout or there is literally ZERO chance you get the drop, period. You already failed here:

If you have to enter any card/bank details, it’s over. You HAVE to have Shopify quick checkout setup already. That way it’s like literally a 2 second checkout process, it only takes like 2 clicks in total. Everyone who says “It’s gotta be bots” because they can’t comprehend someone being able to check out in less than two seconds… I can tell you as someone who’s done it over and over again it IS possible, and you just gotta be quick with it.

All this coupled with the CRAZY demand (literally hundreds of people going for sometimes only 20 pieces) explains what you’re seeing.

That’s nice and all but we quite literally have people who have bragged about using bots for these drops

The countdown is client side and actually has nothing do with the yoyos being actually available as my screenshot shows…

one-drop-yo-yos.myshopify.com/products/100-count-basic-strings.js

Anyone can add .js to the product page and generate a cart link like this using the variant ID on the page:

I don’t think botting as as common as people are saying. I was slightly curious about this as well, and I had never tried for something that seemed so desiredable while simultaneously rare, so I tried for a pink legacy peak. I guess there was a competitive side of me that was wondering if I could be fast enough. The day before I had all info in shoppay good to go with payment, and shipping. The day of the drop, what I noticed is that for the first 30 seconds after the drop, it was marked as sold out, but then it opened up closer to 10:01 than 10:00. I think that it took forever to load the pages because of the demand on the server. I could be wrong, but my guess is if bots are as common as people are suggesting, with only 20ish available, a bot should have been able to be much faster than I. But anyway, I landed #37. So… :man_shrugging: maybe there are bots, but in a scenario like this, if there were going to be bots, I just think that someone (me) on his phone during a fantasy football draft at his house with 20+ devices connected to my 350mbps connection would have been the one to not get it. I could be wrong, I could be very lucky, but my tip to anyone is to refresh constantly for the first 1-3 minutes of the drop, and practice the day before, haha.

I’ve been watching this discourse closely from the beginning and the only person to my knowledge who said this (which kinda unfortunately is what started all the bot discussion) was MikeT, and to be clear he said he had a friend that could help him do it, but that he didn’t actually end up doing it. To my knowledge there is no one that has actually done this and bragged about it. Happy to change my mind if presented with evidence. Until then, literally hundreds of people (a lot of which have ShopPay enabled like I said) going for ultra-low quantities easily explains this.

Under these conditions, stock will last exactly as long as the fastest checkout methods can complete, which is seconds.

I’ve had this conversation so many times, in so many hobbies…

If anyone actually/truly cared about preventing botting, they’d create a waiting room, lottery, or queue, instead – but that will never happen and those can be gamed as well.

When it comes down to ATC/checkout bots (which are plentiful for Shopify) or F5+reflexes.. it literally doesn’t matter. As long as all checkouts occur AFTER release time, then all is fair in love and war. And, if you disagree, see my main point directly above.

It’s just more work that still won’t please everyone.

Idk anything about any potential botting, but there are only so many collector oriented brands with only so many releases. To me it seems like almost every collector type yoyoer is waiting on the same releases.

Someone could have drawn the same conclusion about Deepest States for a while. Eventually, even splashes and Cerakote drops could be bought at leisure.
