Here is a good tutorial that might help you out:

The problem is I miss the triangle. My string is really short, and the triangle is like yoyo-sized, not like a big nice loop.

Tie is a great guy, but his tutorial is wrong.

You drop the slack off your throw hand, and let the bottom part of it hang below the yoyo. Unpinch the string on your freehand so the yoyo drops onto the bottom string.
