Well I recently just got back into throwing again after a gap of about 20 years and I bought a Magic YoYo T9 which is unresponsive and an Auldey Ice spirit (also unresponsive)…I learned how to bind from front mounts after about 5 mins but still kinda struggling binding from an undertrapeze…
I have learned a few front style tricks and now want to learn some sideways tricks…
Anyway what is really kinda bothering me is when I throw a breakaway to get into a trapeze, double or nothing etc…my yoyo keeps spinning round (so I have to rotate myself to keep in line) and I am pretty sure I am at fault because if I just hang my yoyo it’s hanging level…
Another thing that I think is just down to practise is that I can do some tricks but they just look kinda limp and have no flow to them…as an example, I can do the motions of split the atom but it seems more like my hands are doing all the movement “around” the yoyo instead of the yoyo moving…
If any of this makes sense please feel free to offer any guidance…
Thanks, and yeah I kinda have a dodgy right arm (it dosen’t straighten fully) and I am left handed so I think that maybe I just need to adjust my left arm a bit more…
I have only been yoyoing again for about 3 weeks, but patience is deffinitely not 1 of my virtues haha
Ya if you keep practicing your tricks will look effortless and smooth. Also as you progress, your throw will get straighter, and harder which may help you a bit.
The yoyo rotating is due to something called precession.
You can control it (and tilt) to a large degree once the yoyo is mounted on the string - it just takes a bit of practise to get the feel for it. Try throwing a Trapeze, and then move your non-throwhand a little forward (away from your body), see what happens? Now move it closer to your body. As you get better you will be able to naturally correct precession and tilt as you play without even thinking about it. It might also help to practise throwing Breakaways and Trapezes standing in front of a wall - this will help force you to throw parallel to your shoulders.
I wouldn’t worry too much about not being able to straighten your arm too much, unless it is a real hindrance.
As you keep playing you’ll slowly get more fluid and less of a stick-man. Don’t stress too much, just throw when you have a chance, and slowly you’ll get better and better!
The arm thing isn’t really a hinderance unless I wanna do pushups or something, but I’m lazy neway so it’s not something I worry about…
Fred your elements video tutorial is epic I was actually watching it again on my phone on the train into work this morning…how long have you been throwing coz u are awesome? You also look a LOT like a friend of mine from the UK…I even posted the video on my facebook wall and tagged him in it haha
I have only really bean learning the trapeze tricks for a couple of days and the only place at home I can practice is a narrow corridor so its the same concept as the wall you suggested, it forces me to throw parallell…
I have kinda got going into a trapeze/brother back n forth sequence and double or nothing down quite well now and have been learning Eli Hops, and getting there with those too…
Still kinda strugling binding from the undertrapeze a bit but I worked out a way of kinda using some slack from a sleeper to bind it but thats a bit hit-n-miss at the moment…
Trapeze, Reverse Trapeze (Trapeze & his Bro) and Double or Nothing are all you need to throw basic combos together.
Focus on getting them all solid, and try see ho many ways you can get from Double or Nothing back to Trapeze. And of course, there’s tons of good stuff in that video for you to go through.
