Hmmm. I know that you’re technically correct, but look at it from this point of view. When you communicate to someone, you want them to get the message. If someone gets your message, and gets the gist of what you mean to say, to an extent that they can tell you that they know what you meant to say, but that you technically did not say it in the “proper” manner, that means that, ultimately they got the message, but they just don’t like how you put it.
When I communicate, sometimes I want to be proper, but in informal context, I just want people to get the message. “I could care less” gets the message across either way, even to people who can point out that it was not “proper.” That could indeed be a cultural difference. Because no one here is pretending to not know what the message was intended to communicate. And, I have never heard an American say that in a formal context. It’s usually said to dismiss someone or make their point seem irrelevant. How much do we say to “not be nice” is proper anyway? Not much, especially in an informal context.
Americans have a certain humor too. We will say things, make sure you get the message, and give you just enough to stew on it and want to analyze it. We don’t care, cause by that time, the person is standing there got the message, and they are still pondering as we’re walking off into the distance. In the end, they got the message. Haha…something else aren’t we?
Trust this…“I could care less” is here to stay, it’s a phenomenon…taken on a life of it’s own. I still use it sometimes…it’s one less syllable. I could’nt care less doesn’t roll off the tongue Yuki. 
You put in less work to dismiss them…that would be a T.A. comeback. “You’re not worth the extra syllable.” >:( I’m a meanie huh?
I think it’s one of those things that, although technically incorrect, has been used so often it’s become an accepted figure of speech (much like the word “aluminium” which you guys insist on spelling and pronouncing without the second ‘i’). That said though, I find “I couldn’t care less” rolls off the tongue just fine. Especially if each word is punctuated with a pause for emphasis. All that said, I love the comeback!

^ I love the comeback too! The comeback is so worth saying it that way. And, we can use the same comeback for “aluminum” too. ;-). Aluminium doesn’t roll off the tongue either…needed a makeover haha.
Afaik “aluminum” comes from a misspelling on a paper by an American scientist.
Aluminium totally rolls off the tongue. You have the change the syllable with the accent. In Canada and the States, we say “Ah-LOO-minum”. But the Queen’s English doesn’t emphasize the “LOO” and there’s also an unwritten dipthong (?), resulting in something more like:
Al-yoo-MIH-nee-um
Sounds beautiful to me. I use it all the time, but since we don’t typically say that in Canada, the people I use it with know I’m just being cheeky.
Noticing “I could care less” is not about pedantry but rather straight-up correct usage. Just because people might say “Scuze me while I kiss this guy,” that doesn’t mean that Jimi’s lyrics should be changed.
If you want a phrase that’s REALLY butchered and that I get truly pedantic over, it’s the bastardization of the term “begging the question”. Hint: if you ever say the phrase, “which begs the question,” you are using it in the newfandangled ignorant way.

So I heard Jensen likes aluminum potatoes! Crazy stuff. Apparently he eats them with his white shirts on while people judge him for messing around while he does because the judges don’t want him to offend anyone in the way he eats these aluminum potatoes.

Great things come out of mistakes. This is an American forum, so Aluminum it is. And whoever doesn’t like it on this forum…I could care less. Everyone knows what that means, and believe me, they got the message too. 
After all, that’s what really matters. They’re not worth the extra syllable. 
I’m going to say it at least once a day to annoy the non-Americans. After all, who would hang around a bunch of Americans and then be annoyed at the American way of saying this or that. That’s like me going on a forum for yo-yoers in the UK and complaining about how they say words or phrases, when I know exactly what they are communicating. I would not be surprised if they told me to hang out on an American forum if I was so bothered by it.

Them’s fightin’ words there, missy! =P In all honesty though, Americanisms don’t bother me as long as everything is punctuated and spelled out properly (even if it’s just proper American English ;)). More bothered by shockingly punctuated rants in caps. Neither bothers me enough to keep me away from all you lovely folks and sparkling conversation ^^
