It’s not a bad hold necessarily, but it really locks you in to one type of throw, and makes it difficult to adapt to other tops / string lengths / adjustments. There are many top throwers who throw like that and call me crazy, but I’ve seen it happen, I’ve seen fairly good top spinners unable to throw a top with the correct amount of string on it. Preference is one thing, but lacking the ability to adapt is another.
What that hold is doing is it is helping you release with the tip toward you, which means your throw is letting the tip point away when you hold it “correctly”. The other way to do it is to hold it “normal” and turn your palm toward the ground a little as you release.
