So I decided my first yoyo was going to be the dv888 since it was responsive but could change to unresponsive with me; then later on get the one I really want (honey badger). Well, silly me was so excited I had found one on facebook bst for half price, that I totally forgot to check which it was. yup its unresponsive already.
So I’m trying to learn to do a return bind and I just cant get it, at all. I switched to my left hand to give my finger a break and even though my throw is super weak I can actually bind! Well, 3 outa 5 tries… I am right hand dominant but do use my left for doors, faucets, etc…could that mean I may throw left handed?
I know I’m just learning so its gonna be awkward either way until I get it down pat but now I’m not sure which hand I should learn on…I have a strong confident throw on the right but trying to do things feels fiddly, my left is a stupidly weak throw but trying to bind feels more comfortable…which would yall recommend?
Lots of hockey players shoot with the opposite hand.
Heh, I was just thinking the same thing. I grew up playing… how I ended up here in fact. You ever play?
Anything is possible. I know people who only kick a soccer ball with their left foot but everything else is righty. Most lefties are discouraged, or were discouraged, I have no idea what the state of penmanship classes are in schools these days, from using their left hand.
Do what feels right.
Or skip it all and go right into 3A.
Also, don’t just attempt a bind. If your throw is getting harder you could have a dv888 missile launching at you. Try to get on the trapeze or brain twister and scrub some speed off your throw first. Then bind.
Jimi Hendrix was right handed but played the guitar backwards🤓
Apparently he was ambidextrous. Wrote with right (probably due to penmanship classes), ate and held telephone with the right; smoked, combed hair and threw with the left.
Love me some Electric Lady Land.
i’m trying to learn Responsive on my leftie but i throw unresponsive right handed and honestly i’d do whatever is the easiest way to yoyo if you can’t bind with your dominant hand but you can with your non dominant try learning with your non dominant
I’m left-hand dominant, throw yoyos righty(except when looping with both hands)… I can throw with either, ambidextrous more or less, but left hand is slightly more dominant. I felt I needed more control with my binding hand, because I was struggling a bit when learning to bind with my right hand, so I switched it up just to see, and viola, I’m better with a right hand throw. It confuses my friends, but all the more fun! So yes, throwing lefty could be fine for you.
Yeah I was supposed to be part of the US NTDP before I got cancer. I was a really good goalie. Even after cancer I played street hockey and was on the team that ended up being Team USA for the age group.
Um, I had to go look up what 3A is (I’m that new to thisđź¤) that’s crazy ppl can do all that with two!! Then I seen the counter weight stuff, man, if any of yall can do that…you amaze me!
I think I’ll give learning left a serious go then since I feel bit more control.
The largest issue I find throwing leftie (am left handed) is that 90% of all tutorials are run with a right hand throw. One of the problems I have being left handed is I have a really hard time translating their hand movements to my hands (I see my left hand as “main hand” and their right hand as “main hand”, aka the same hand which causes confusion).
The second issue is that there aren’t a lot of strings designed for left hand throw. It does make a difference. With normal strings thrown right handed, by doing tricks, binds, and winding, the string will become tighter, whereas, throwing a normal string left handed, the string will become looser. With a looser string, you will find yourself more often taking the string off the finger to remove excess twists (to tighten the string back up throwing left hand, or loosen by throwing right hand). Unless you make the strings yourself, I’ve only found a couple sources that make strings for left hand throw (one available from the store here, search inverse string).
I did noticing it tightening faster than the other way but thought this might be bcbim so new… I do spin my own yarn on my ashford travelor spinning wheel but I doubt I’d give that a try anytime soon. Hmm
Thanks for letting me know. I’ll look into it more
This was the case for me for both hockey and baseball. I write and throw right handed, but have a left handed shot/swing
This is what I do. I am right handed but throw left, I also play soccer with my left. But do pretty much everything else with my right. Im pretty sure it is called cross dominance.
I’m right handed but throw with my left; when I started throwing the middle finger on my right hand was injured. It is always weird to try throwing with my right hand.
I’m also left-eye dominant and when I rode skateboards I was goofy stance (left foot back).
This. Also Nadal(tennis) is right handed but trained to play with his left. My baseball swing is also with my left. I’m no good at baseball tho but it felt more natural at first since it’s similarish to a tennis backhand swing that I was comfortable with.
I think it’d be perfectly fine to start yo-yo with no dominant hand. The movements will feel uncomfortable at first either way tbh
Also 3a’s a thing, a lot of people practice with their left to get more comfortable before transitioning into 3a. If you start with your non dominant hand 3a may be easier to pick up down the line
I’m righty but throw lefty. I learned righty, hurt my wrist and didn’t wanna stop throwing, learned lefty and preferred it once I healed up lol
I’m glad to hear it’s a pretty common thing!
this all hadn’t crossed my mind too much… put it on the other hand, point your computer in the mirror for the tutorial, etc… but when @mogoo mentioned regarding string, that was a really interesting point to think about
i also had a reawakening recently with eye dominance with my kiddo at cub scouts. we were at the air rifle range, and the range master walked up and down had all the kids make triangles with their hands and look through it. he could immediately pick out eye dominance, obviously despite handedness. i used to hunt when i was young, so i hadn’t thought about that in decades…
