But yoyo’s getting fancier with bearings and break pads drew a lot of people in including myself. Maybe not great compared to what we have now but it was greater than what was before it.
Yep, from fixed axle to transaxle and bearing was a huge leap. I remember getting my first cheapo transaxle that spins a lot longer than any yoyo I’ve ever had in that time which were all wooden, it was amazing.
Regardless, good marketing will sell almost anything.
Not saying that Tiger E-Yo was any good, but I have fond memories of mine, and it’s the reason I got in to yoyoing. So while they were riding the coattails, the E-Yo did at least get someone into the game 8)
Actually, I had that exact color of E-Yo and everything. I didn’t used to know how to throw a sleeper, but I did use the throw counter and tried to out do my high score of consecutive throws. I actually really liked that thing as a kid.
ANYWAY. Like Steve said, I think the slow and steady pace we’ve been seeing recently is a good one. we are getting stellar products, the events are steadily getting bigger and bigger. I liked WYYC’s idea of having a level in the building (I’m guessing Tokyo used a multistory area for their comp) that had the stream on a large screen with product demos and all that for the public to look in to. That’s a really cool way to bring people in. Honestly, I’d prefer a niche with high quality product that is steadily released, rather than a gem being let out once in a blue moon for the thousands of people in one corner of the internet to fight over, or a mass produced poo storm of bad products to wade through with a whole bunch of fad kids to deal with when you yo-yo in public or have to pick through their posts on social media.
You would also see the bootleg market spike if yo-yo popularity rose, as all of the fad kids would need to have a Draupnir or the newest CLYW release, etc…
If only duncan would push the Butterfly XT harder…
well, they are pushed, I find them at my local target along with some yomegas.
