My favorite fun-fact about the Studio Sessions is that #10 leaked the Tyler, The Creator song Tron Cat to the world. lmao. And it’s a different cut from the one that ended up on the album.
A reader in my shoutbox has pointed me to a yo-yo video that features “Tron Cat” a new song from Tyler, The Creator that will be on his incredibly anticipated new album, Goblin. Don’t know how the user got a hold of it, but it seems like it’s legit.
Take a listen below:
The (now broken) embed in that article links to this video which was removed from YouTube because of copyright

(also matches the link posted to the Sector Y blog back in April 2011 when they posted the video)
But fortunately the internet is forever and someone mirrored it!
Fair warning the song is very explicit and is about intrusive thoughts (iiuc)
I’ve watched this guy wright video like a half dozen times, it’s amazing. hope I’m not opening some can of worms, but is he still playing these days?
He does here and there actually did a recent signature model with G2 called the encore it’s pretty fantastic I highly recommend keeping an eye out for it! From what I know he throws more for personal enjoyment than content creation anymore
A soul thrower if you will
Very interesting and informative by a guy that is quite a player himself. He certainly is an upper level player to say the least.
But, that being said, I am somewhat puzzled by a couple of things?
First…. Why Takeshi Matsuura is ‘not’ even mentioned?
2nd… Why Mir Kim’s’ 2023 winning freestyle was place a notch down from ‘Goat tier’ because the reasoning is that ‘we don’t know what his actual potential is at that point’ so the power of his 2023 freestyle gets demoted to S+ category until we find out what this kid can’t actually do, lol? <I guess we all found out in 2024🙀
Again… I really appreciate and recognize that a lot of time and trouble went into the making of this video. Some great critiques from a player that has the skill depth to know what he is looking at…
But, I feel he missed a few things that should not have been excluded.
Holy smokes, this was the video I bought as a kid. I’m watching it now and laughing at all the same old stuff, and my wife in cringing. Bookmarked this video, thanks for sharing.
i see where the “yoyo as a weapon” myth was blown up
I’ve tried to include some “must watch” yo-yo videos and contest freestyles below, mostly from the 2010-2015 or so era since that’s when I’m most familiar with.
Videos
- Jason Lee: Loyal
- Jensen/Charles Ill Vibes and Recess - Honestly all the JK/Charles videos from this era I remember being huge (though there are a lot of skits in there), so here’s a couple.
- Harrison Lee: Orca and Andrew Maider: Blizzard - honestly CLYW videos promoting their yo-yos are all classics to me. The filmography in their stuff is top notch, I’d recommend just giving them all a watch lol.
- Zach Gormley: 2012 and Yoyo Master- Last couple CLYW team videos, I promise. His 2009 video is also fun to look back on.
- Yoyofactory classic yo-yo promo videos: Grind Machine, Protostar, 888. Honestly as a kid I watched these videos endlessly. Just like with the CLYW videos they’re so well shot and I’d recommend giving a look to some of the other videos they put out around this time too.
- Evan’s Rocket Man video is undoubtedly a classic as well.
- The recent Empathy videos for each of their releases have also all been bangers. Would recommend watching all of those. The Noir video in particular imo is the yo-yo video of 2024.
Contest Performances
- Worth saying all Hajime WYYC freestyles are worth watching but my two personal favourites are the classic Soloham only and his 2023 routines.
- Similarly, for me, anytime Shu Takada performed at WYYC was really entertaining. So here’s his 2018 win.
- Rei Iwakura 4a performances also fall into the same legendary category as the above, so here’s his 2019 win.
- Christopher Chia AP 2011 1st - The battle between him and Marcus Koh here was mad. His WYYC 2012 3rd freestyle is also really hype.
- Ahmad Kharisma’s first AP win was also crazy to me at the time with his cross-armed style.
- Zach’s US nats win, similar to his Worlds win, is imo one of the classic US nats performances.
- Harold Owens III also has a classic US nats win.
- Akitoshi Tokubuchi’s 2013 Japan Nats win was one of the early choreo heavy routines.
- Iori Yamaki’s 2014 and 2015 WYYC routines I think are worthy of note here as well.
- Andrew Bergen’s WYYC 2017 2nd place was a big moment for the popularisation and development of slack tricks.
- Takahiro Iizuka’s 2010 WYYC routine was a classic to me at the time for its tech.
- Quentin Godot’s 4a is almost balletic, I’m a really big fan of his EYYC win.
- Ben Conde’s 2011 WYYC performances was massive at the time for all the theatrics and the huge bangers. His 2012 and 2015 performances are also favourites of mine.
- Shaqler’s 2010 WYYC AP win is also an all time performance imo.
- You can never have enough Takeshi and Augie beat me to his 2018 WYYC freestyle, so here’s one of his JN 1a wins.
- Hank’s 3a WYYC performances are also deserving of highlight imo.
- Got to include Yuuki’s 07 WYYC win as well. It’s a classic piece of yo-yo history.
- Hiroyuki Suzuki’s 05 WYYC win was my and I’m sure many others’ first exposure to competitive yoyoing thanks to a previous upload of YOYO GOD and I think his WYYC wins are worth watching.
- Much more recent than my other inclusions but Ayumu Kasuga’s JN performance this year is probably going to join them as a classic routine.
