How much money would you spend for a handmade carbon fiber yoyo?

i was thinking to build my own yoyo, i’ll just find some “donor” rim and make a carbon fiber body on it, it’ll probably shaped like the phenom, but there’s infinite possibility, carbon fiber is very lightweight and i could definitely get the yoyo around 30 grams with 10gr rims, or 50 grams for 20gr rims, i would probably sell it, how much would people value this, i’m thinking $235 but i wouldn’t buy a $235 yoyo myself, what do you think?

This is an Awesome Project!

Please research the Rev G Yoyo.

If you had a “Functional” great playing Carbon Fiber Yoyo, You might be able to get that kind of price tag on it.

However, this isn’t just “Building” a yoyo for that price.

Will this be a fixed axle or bearing? Responsive or un responsive?

Sounds neat

If bearing what spacer system do you plan to use? I recommend the new freshly dirty stem system.

seen and heard that yoyo as one of the worst yoyo ever, and i believe that’s just a badly designed yoyo, i’ll use a fairly normal stainless steel rims and just basically did what bimetal or hybrid yoyos did, except it’s carbon fiber

I own a Rev G. The issue is not the rims. It has to do with the response system. Like Captrogers asked? How are you addressing the Axel and Response?

Most of the issues the rev g had were in the adjustable design. However that’s never stopped the desire to own one.

I know others have made carbon fiber projects as one offs I can’t come up with examples but I imagine a handmade YoYo like that could easily go for 250+ if you feel that’s what it’s worth in your efforts.

it’ll be a bearing, i haven’t decided wether it’ll be a C or D bearing, but i’ll probably try to make it with no spacer first, if it fails then i’ll probably design one with some donor metal spacer from any plastic yoyo, for the hubs i was thinking to use side effects, but i’m making it because i’m on a budget and didn’t want to spend much money on a yoyo, so i’ll probably just use spin gadget alum hubs

normal design with 19mm pad

Wasn’t a carbon fiber throw one of the most epic failure of a yo-yo.
I do not know if the weight distribution can be done with a carbon fiber throw. You would have to build up the rims with a lot of resin compound and that would be difficult to get 2 matching sides weight wise. If it could be done I believe a responsive design would be more possible due to the limitations on the material.

If you are taking a preexisting hybrid and replacing the plastic with carbon fiber, that would be really cool. Takes all the “Hard Work” of yoyo design out.

i’ve actually contacted shinobu-san when i’m researching for this project, i didn’t know he’s the S. Kon, i just searched yoyo modder on Ig and found a man posting AZ-1, anyone who drives an AZ-1 would probably be a nice person, so i hit him up

just hybrid design, carbon fiber is a light weight material, so i’m not gonna make it as a rim weight, i’m using it for the body only, the rim weight will be done using stainless steel rims(or brass)

yep, exactly what i had in mind, but not an exact copy, i would design the body in a cad and 3d print the mold

Interesting. Things will have to be aligned well or it’ll vibe a fair bit. An existing hub platform will probably make that easier than trying to salvage parts of various yo-yos as you just have to ensure same weight and a flat surface.

With that said if you have the confidence and modding skills to do it with salvaged parts then that sounds like a rad project.,

yeah the problem mostly lies in actually producing it, i’ll do compression mold methode(forged), making the mold precise is hard with 3d printing because i’ll have to resurface the mold and i’m laying the carbon fiber by hand, so it’ll be hard to lay it evenly everytime, although this methode is known to ensure even distribution of structural integrity

Have you thought about using the new Freshly Dirty Stem system?
Seems like this is exactly what they intended for with it.

i’ve seen similar system from yoyojoker, and decided it’s too much center weight

Take some inspiration from skon and the vector. A hand made carbon fiber yoyo that was actually really good!

I think he had the original priced at $700 and sold all of them.

Just found some better images to add.

yeah seen that when i’m searching for carbon fiber yoyo, although $700 is kinda too expensive, how much yoyo did he make? i think there’s a fine balance between price and quantity to make profit, hence the price question, because i doubt there would be more than 10 people who can afford a $1000 yoyo

As cool as a yoyo might be once we hit 400+ I start questioning my own sanity on such a purchase. No offense to those that make and buy such things just not enough of a want to out weigh my needs for the month

Heck I quiver a bit at 200+ but I’ve accepted some material and process are expensive/time consuming/ difficult enough it makes sense to pay that premium.
