How Josh Yee broke the rules to win 5a nats in 2017

Hi all! I’ve been doing a biweekly yoyo show and podcast on yoyo theory called ‘kill your yoyo’ .

This week I interviewed national 5a champion Josh Yee and we had an awesome conversation on theory, musicality, and furries! But one point that stuck out to me was how he very mindfully broke both the written and unwritten rules of yoyoing to stand out and win gold. Find out what he did and what you can learn from his success. Listen to his episode now!

I would love to read this if possible.

Hi Joe! So the basics of it are that in competition, generally ppl fill every second with fast tricks since they only have 2 minutes to do as much as possible. Josh broke that rule by choosing a slow song and even stopping yoyoing at one point. A rule that’s actually written, is that repeated elements didn’t add points. Well Josh broke that too. I could write up how but Josh really says it best in the episode.
There’s lots of other good stuff we discuss too, highly recommend giving it a listen. Let me know if this helps and thanks for the comment!

Absolutely! I don’t for one second believe he should loose his title. In the episode we discuss hit routine as a case study of how yoyoers can bend the rules of competition and challenge established norms to make competitions more performative and better overall. Check out the episode, you’ll see what I mean.
