They can be hard to remove.
Pliers can work but if you have good finger grip, you can pop them off.
If you’re using Z-stacks, the string trick is best. Thread a yoyo string under the stack, twice if you can, one on each side of the hub. Pull up. Works good.

I usually just pull them off.
Z-Stacks, I would use a loop of string.
with hubstacks if you slightly pull them off usually I am able to get a loop of string around the stack and pull it off that way
