Horizontal help

I watched Gentry’s video on how to do horizontal which helped tremendously. What I’m finding is that my motion going from trapeze to brother, and the banana turnover is not that fast. For some reason I’m finding it hard to speed it up. Are there specific things I can practice to help with my speed for this trick?

Practice vertically until you can do it without thinking. Even without looking.

Most start with skin the gerbel and there is no reason not to. So learn that vertically and take your time with it. Then move that to horizontal.

Yeah I can do the trick blindfold but it doesn’t feel like the same movement horizontally. I shortened my string. Something mentioned in Genty’s video I overlooked, and that is helping with speed and control. I miss the string a lot still, but I feel the shorter string helps with the speed issue I was having. I am getting my throw high so it is a true horizontal I working on. I found that practicing outside helps a lot too. I throw the yoyo harder as I’m not worried about hitting something breakable. It is significantly easier at 45°, but that’s not horizontal.

Well that’s your problem… I can’t do horizontal if I don’t throw at my highest power either.

Also, Gentry says to throw 90 degrees from the start. So without the banana turnover. What happens is that you have it more difficult starting out but often 2 million tries it works out. If you start 45 degrees and then move your way up to 90 degrees using the banana turnover you see results of your practice much quicker.

I won’t say Gentry is wrong. I’ll just say that his way isn’t necessarily the best fitting for everyone.

Brandon Vu suggests starting at 45° too. I’ve been debating the two philosophies.

I think horizontal takes a lot more practice than you would naturally assume it would. I don’t know if I can still mentally process horizontal tricks other than to keep it moving. That being said, it does help changing up yo-yos to get the right speed for your hands in horizontal. The plastic cheat code and evolve moved slower for me and made it easier to get acclimated.

I would agree with you. It is much harder than I thought it would be. The frequency of hitting the trick is low so it’s hard to dial in the muscle memory. It will definitely take time, but I think it’s achievable. I’m going to try to work on it daily since I’ve worked past a lot of the fear, and I know if I don’t attempt it for a while I will have to battle the fear again. It’s weird how the same movement horizontally doesn’t feel the same as the regular movement, so it’s hard to process. I can do the trick in my sleep until it’s horizontal, then my brain has to map out what’s going on and I have to move too fast.

Edit: the intermediate steps like just practicing trapeze without the bind is really smart. It seems obvious to me now. I will add that if you have a bimetal with a strong spin you can use that opportunity to go horizontal trapeze, let it fall, then finger spin. My outlier spins for days, so I don’t have to rush. Now my fingerspins went from shaky to locked in.

I also had 2 questions about horizontal:

  1. Should you wrap the yoyo string around your TH?
  2. How can I improve my angle?

Watch Gentry Steins video on horizontal. Throw high and keep your elbows up to get the right angle. I throw above eye level and by the time I hit trapeze it is eye level. If my elbows are too low the yoyo drops.
