So I forked out $60 for a wooden yoyo!!! I bought the Ed Haponik TMBR/SPYY. It is an amazing performer! However, it keeps coming apart. It doesn’t give any warning either, so my expensive yoyo is taking a beating. I have literally tightened it to the point, I’m scared I’ll twist the axle in half, and had it come apart two throws later!
For now, I’m putting it away. I checked TMBR’s web site, but I could not find any contact info. If anyone has any tips or tricks to try, I would appreciate it!
Sorry to hear you’re having issues with the EH. When you tighten it are you just twisting the yo-yo halves like a normal yo-yo or are you tightening the outside hub pieces as well?
The outside pieces lock the yo-yo halves in place, you can tighten them with a dime or something small like that and it should secure the yo-yo.
If that doesn’t work then just give us a call or send an email and we can help you out.
Yep, what Garrett said. I have a number of TMBR’s wood threaded yoyo’s and after I learned that little trick I never have them come apart.
Just loosen the yoyo halves, tighten the cap just a little (1/4 turn at most), then put the halves back on, tighten lightly (you don’t want to snap the axle).
I have heard of some people putting a piece of plumbers/Teflon tape on the axle also, but I don’t think that is necessary.
I tried tightening the caps instead of twisting the halves, and that did help, but didn’t eliminate the problem. I also tried roughing up the axel end and the inside end of the cap. That helped as well, but still didn’t stop it from coming apart. I wouldn’t mind it so much if I could notice it and tighten it back, but it just flies apart without warning.
I was experimenting as described above, and after getting frustrated, set it down next to the garden. My boys watered the garden later, and told me they got water on my yoyo. That got me thinking about a possible solution! I moistened the inside end of the cap (I licked it! and tightened it down well. It didn’t come loose again! My thinking was that the moisture would cause the wood to expand slightly, and make it tighter after I tightened it with the coin.
We’ll see what happens after the moisture dries again, but at least I’ve found a solution that will last long enough for me to play with it.
So the next morning the wood shrunk back, and the yoyo was very loose. However, once moistened, the wood stays swollen, keeping the halves tightly secured for several hours. I have yet to have to halves come unscrewed again during play!
I think I will buy more axels though, to try out, and to insure that I can use this amazing yoyo for years to come!
use standard elmers glue. it’s not a permanent seal and it will hold for months. my brother uses it on his kendamas to keep the sarado on and it doesn’t fall off after a month or two.
I’ve had the same experience with my Baldwin, I’m too scared to use it for it flying apart. It’s taken a beating from it. Still a very nice wooden yoyo!
