Help with practicing

So recently i have been on this trend where i yoyo everyday, but i dont do it consistently. Normally I leave my yoyo at home and not bring it to school now a days, but at school is where i practice the most efficiently. I have a comp in 1.5 months at nationals, and i really need to get a move on. If u could leave any tips that would be great, because im really trying to win :crossed_fingers:

You will need to increase your practice time. Once you have your routine designed, practice it till you cant do it wrong.

If you make a mistake during the routine, practice your recoveryand keep going.

When my wife was teaching me piano this was something she stressed. Keep practicing through your mistakes. If you stop and restart each time you make a mistake you are only practicing making that mistake.

Start to practice more time and if you have some passages where you do mistakes, instead of just let it go, stop and start to practice that passage until it become natural, you will see after some attempt you will start to hit it consistently, after you do it, start from that combo and try to do it without mistakes, once you master that than go with the whole routine.

Every time you do a mistake, stop, think about it, practice and solve it, in this way you do not have “weak” spot in your routine but you are sure about every passage, if you can I would say try your routine in public so you get used to people watching you.

Yup! Practice, practice, practice. Make it part of your daily schedule and stick to it until the competition. If you have too many distractions at school, then leave it until you get home. Get your homework out of the way, then dedicate the time to your routine. You need to have your routine ironed out to flawless!! The key is consistency.

I also heard somewhere that a heavier throw might help for your first time on stage. With the nerves settling in, the added weight helps to ground you. What will you be playing with?

Good luck! We can’t wait to see it.

I tend to play/practice a lot more if I keep my yoyo not only nearby but within arms reach.

Are you doing sport? Also I agree with everyone and suggest also making the difficult spots into repeaters to get reps in of just the trickiest elements in addition to doing the whole thing.

I keep a yo-yo (or 3) in my pocket at all times and play it any time I have to wait for something. I’m not actively “practicing”. I just think of it as playing, but somehow I keep getting better.

In public, depending on the space and volume level, I usually play fixie/responsive as it’s not as loud and doesn’t require 2 hands, but I always have at least a fixie/responsive and an unresponsive on me. I don’t have a lot of free time to throw so, finding those moments in the day where it’s okay to sling for a sec is helpful for decompressing and keeping my head clear. And has the apparent added benefit of progression, even if it’s not the ultimate goal.

TLDR: keep that thang on ya!

Try recording your routine and playing it back for yourself or practicing in front of a mirror. You’ll be able to see how you look while performing and if you’re watching yourself in the mirror and doing tricks at the same, it can help you get comfortable looking up at the audience and picking out points in the routine to get the crowd hyped.
