Why not? Silicone would work as a masking agent. If he covered it right, it would work probably better than tape, as he could mask exactly where he wanted to, which is easier said than done while using tape.

And if its the kind of silicone that doesn’t come out easily??

Like Blue gasket Masker?! (At least in my case it sticks and doesn’t come out whole…)

Well then it’s kind of obvious… Don’t use Blue Gasket Maker…
