I can’t quite figure out who the audience is these days for a 70g monometal.
What about a 77g plastic yoyo with LEDs for $150?
where can i find a tutorial?
I guess the trade-off there is that you get fancy light effects in return for that 77g weight and the accompanying sacrifice in playability and performance.
Probably very slow tech players who like their tricks around Takeshi speed.
Are you talking about an specific yoyo or company?
Well, a specific yoyo did get me wondering, but I’d say the question is meant to be open-ended. I mean, if any company today chooses to make a 70g monometal, what type of players are they targeting it towards? And just how big is that demographic?
Absolutely nobody is playing with 70g monometal yoyos. At least not that I’m aware of.
67g is workable. There’s yoyos around that weight that feel and move nice. But 70? don’t know. Don’t even know any monometals that weight that much that aren’t old or mid-school, besides from the OD Downbeat.
Retic burm is 69 something. But its huge so it still feels super light and floaty. Very unique yoyo
But it’s weight is explained by it’s huge diameter. Designs like that make perfect sense.
This throw is crazy big and heavy, 80mm and 90grams
67g is preferable to me.
Once I’m further removed from the purchase date, I plan on unloading a few yo-yos on the BST.
My play time currently is like, 85% Butter, 10% WA, 5% other stuff, usually whatever is new (Marco right now) or normal Shutter.
I don’t see the need to keep a bunch of stuff I won’t use and aren’t collection goals.
Basic tricks are like the good vibe ambassadors of yo! I always try to throw in a lot of basic stuff when I notice people are watching. That’s my thought atm.
Random yoyo thought for today:
7/10 times I’ve posted a trick on r/Throwers using my beloved teal Protostar, someone always mistakens it for an OD Rally, and sometimes they ask if it has cracks or something like that lol.
Yea, I bet people find the distinct look of the classics cooler than cat’s cradle-like tech or a failed whip. And something like the Eiffel Tower may seem stupid, but it is so flashy that people get really impressed by it. Good call.
I decided to throw in a hubstack yoyo with my recent black friday purchase and picked up the Skyline. Everyone has been saying for a while how hubstacks are a gimmick, make the yoyo stupid loud, etc. Ok, maybe the yoyo isn’t one of my quietest, but it doesn’t scream, and if it is a gimmick, it is a gimmick I find to be really damn fun. The classic 888 is quickly becoming a yoyo that I am feeling a thirst for.
Agree 100% about hubstacks, just pure fun. I have a mutant DNA that is an absolute blast to play
The hub on my glow protostar is cracked, but my rally completely destroyed itself with a giant crack.
I love hubstacks also. I have an OG DNA, it is a blast, definitely one of my favorite’s from that time, same with the original hubstacked genesis. I feel like the latest DNA and Genesis lose something over those even though they play very well. The new skyline plays very much like my old one and the ti888 plays just like you would expect a really good 888 to play. I’m hoping YYF might still have a few new hubstacked yoyos waiting in the wings.
I really want some one drop side effects with hubstack posts on them. I have a set of ultralights I’m going to modify to accept the grind machine posts. The parlay would rock with side effects.
Was there ever a time when hubstack tricks were a regular/standard part of the contest repetoire (i.e., the meta)?
What caused hubstacks to fall out of favor (i.e., lose popularity)?
