Gap width: How does a designer determine what’s best?

For unresponsive yoyos:
Wide gap, narrow gap… something inbetween…
How does a yoyo designer determine what the gap width should be? Do certain shapes of yoyos demand wide or narrower gaps?

I think it is purely a matter of (the designer’s) personal taste and how many string wraps the designer wants to support before the yoyo becomes “snaggy”.

I was thinking that maybe the designer decided what gap width the yoyo would perform best with. Is the gap width as important as the material and all the other specs that gives the yoyo its unique feel?
