Forma Thoughts

I’ve spent a lot of time with my Forma at this point and have moved past the honeymoon phase and I thought I’d share my thoughts. I’m not good at describing yoyos in the normal review sort of way so this will be more just me sharing what I like about this design.

First off, the numbers:

Forma by Edition Yoyos @MaximShoots

d 56mm
w 46mm
weight 65.9g (clear runs .3g lighter)
gap 4.6mm
comp 6061 al

Forma is in my specs sweet spot. I like a full sized diameter and 46mm wide is wide enough that it’s a bit forgiving if I’m not playing perfectly or if I’m learning something new, but it’s not so wide as to feel excessively big in the hand. The rounded rims make it very comfortable to catch and it’s got a nice hand-feel. Its more rounded H shape gives it a nice wide open catch zone which helps with accuracy and consistency as well as fitting very nicely on the finger if you enjoy grinds.

I feel like 66g is a very average weight but Forma plays much zippier than I would have expected compared to others I own in that weight class. Due to the width as well as the double rim design the weight distribution leans to the faster side. It still has heft and presence, and still feels very controllable, but you can push it to go pretty fast with little effort.

The 4.6mm gap is obviously just a hair bigger than the usual 4.5, but I can play my preferred thicker zs air string on it with no snags whatsoever. Despite no snags, I like to keep response consistent across my throws so I did pull out the stock pads and put in Permatex gear oil rtv. No snags, no slips, and I can still go for more high risk and slippy binds without any trouble.

Forma does come in both blasted and polished finishes and I have both. The blast finish is SUPER low friction, so it handles accidental hand contact extremely well and grinds for days. The polished finish is certainly more tacky, but doesn’t go so far as to feel sticky at all and while they’re both amazing, I think if pressed I’d take the polished over the blasted. I slightly prefer the hand feel and aesthetic but that’s totally down to personal preference and not at all performance related and it’s a photo finish. It comes in warm gray and clear for blasted and gray and navy blue for polished and they all look absolutely fantastic! The colors are very subtle and classy.

The final aesthetic choice I wanted to point out was the cup design. I like the way the double rim looks and the hub has a unique shape with a flat top and I think the extra cut around the lower portion of the cup approaching the hub completes the look.

So my final thoughts… if I had to sum it all up, I’d say Forma is very standard specs executed in the best way possible. It’s got style, it’s got class, it feels substantial and hefty, but moves at a pace that is comfortable for me. I can play it for long multiple hour sessions without fatigue and it’s forgiving without sacrificing too much performance. Basically it does everything I need it to and looks and feels great while doing it.

It’s a yoyo that makes me want to play yoyo.

Thanks for the review, I’ve been eyeing these as it looks like a great player. Im also a big fan of the YYR FYFO

@fradiger makes it sound very enticing

I do like the FYFO and this yoyo a lot, but I do think it’s worth noting that the FYFO plays like.. a whole weight class heavier than the forma, though I do have the clear version which is the lightest of all of them. I still throw my forma around, so I can confidently say it has some staying power, I find myself not really holding onto the traditional comfy organics (grail, butterball, those kinda yoyos) because I find them a bit harder to control, but the forma scratches that itch for me.
