I also use a tomato paste can and have experienced the metal grabbing the foam as it cuts.
An easy fix was to sand the inner and outer edges of the can, creating a nice sharp blade. Though re-sanding had to be done about every 5 or so holes.

Similar: I used a file instead of sandpaper, but bazzacly the same concept (sharpen that can!)
