Are there big differences in the higher end fix axels that are out there? I would like to try fixed axel but am not sure what is good and what the differences are. Any recommendations?
A good fixed axle, with a good player, can get max 45 second spin time. Just don’t get an Imperial or Ja-Ru Stunt Wheelie
If you just want to mess around with stall type tricks then you can’t go wrong with a Duncan Profly. If you want something nicer OUT, TMBR and Hildy Bros. all make top quality throws that you can do a wider variety of things with. You can’t go wrong with any of them.
Thanks! This might seem like a dumb question, but does the OUT just for fun come apart? If so how?
I’ve yet to see something even close to 45 seconds…
I’d go with a No-Jive. Last you a lifetime.
After reading a thread, I saw people talking about using friction stickers on their fixed axels/ no jives. Do you need to do this or will they work fine without them?
Nope, it is not take apart.
They work fine without them. I only use them on throws I have shimmed for a wider gap.
Thanks yooldman what are some of your favorites?
All the TMBRs are nice and have the advantage of being take apart (except the Irving) for removing those tricky knots. The Turner is probably my favorite. From OUT my favorites are the Pocket Love and the Just For Fun. The Hildy Bros. Currier is also really nice, especially the Padauk model.
Thanks again! (On my phone, I’ll come back and thank you later on the computer for all this). One more question. Is there a certain type of string that you like to use that works better for fixed axels?
Any 100% cotton string will work. The type-10 they sell here is very good.
Yooldman is right. The Duncan Profly is a good place to start. Everything else is personal opinion and experimentation. One thing though, if you are using a wood axle be sure to use a cotton string. A polyester will just melt on wood.
I recently started fixed axle and all of the info here is good.
Also, maybe we need a sub forum for fixed?
At least it would be nice to have info all in one place.
You sort of have to poke around to find everything.
Perhaps we can get YYE to set up a Fixed Axle in the “Discussion Sections”.
That would make sense.
I’m definitely getting a Just For Fun soon but I don’t know which wood to choose (Cherry, Padauk, or something else). Do you happen to have a scale to weigh whatever wood(s) you have? I know wood varies, but a ballpark for at least one material would be nice. There’s just something about the gap and response of OUT…
Love those TMBR woodthreads. I’ve never had to take one apart for a knot, but I can see that helping someday.
I agree, that would be really nice, especially for how popular it has become in recent years.
I don’t have a scale but generally the way it goes from lightest to heaviest is: cherry; padauk; maple; oak; purpleheart. Heavier weight generally equals longer spin times. That said, my favorite woods for fixed-axles are padauk and oak.
As much as I love fixed axle play, you could do this with every style of play. And I’d rather not have to drill down to get there e.g. you have to click Yo-Yo Reviews then Looking for Help/Recommendation to find this thread.
My personal preference is just see really good subject titles pop up in my Unread Posts. Like really good. I’m talking descriptive, concise titles. Using the mot juste for everything. And stuff. And whatnot.
P.S. Thanks yooldman for the response to my question.
