What is your favorite material for yo-yos, and why? And what is the difference between 7075, and 7068?
7068 better
7068 is a bit stronger per weight than 7075. You can machine it thinner than any other aluminum alloy that is common in yoyos. It anodizes a bit differently, too.
I like both 7075 and 7068 because you can do some pretty aggressive things with the weight distribution.
I just got the opus and SE winglet. I like them both more then the regular versions.
Makes me want a my favorites in a 7075 or7068.
7075 Umbra!?!? @MarkD?
Delrin is my favorite
It seems 7068 always has the smoothest finish. The glossier and stickier finish of most 7075s is the drawback for me.
The Umbra is already 7068!
I think this is mostly up to the specific blasting setup. I have blasted 7068s that are glossier than some blasted 7075s I own. Some shops do more of one or the other material so it may be their own preference in surface finish showing.
I’ve wondered why occasionally I get a 7075 that has a very smooth finish.
Generally though it seems that 7075 tends to be glossier/stickier and 7068 has a satin smooth feel. The 7068 YYF ultra series feel amazing for example. Is this really just the blast and not somehow related to the metal? Perhaps the process to get that satin smooth feel on 7075 takes more effort because of the metal density or something (have no idea, just speculation). You have vastly more experience, so I defer to you on this! What are your thoughts?
Woooooood I’ve been digging wenge a lot lately but maple is always good
Clearly my favorite material, now clear to me is 7068.
I like wood.
If you don’t blast them or process them at all, the various aluminum alloys have pretty much the same surface feel, glossy with tool marks from the lathe.
Due to their different hardnesses they do end up with different finishes if you blast them for an identical amount of time with an identical blasting medium. There are a lot of variables that go into that.
Titanium or wood, I can’t choose between the two. Wood cannot be beaten for 0A, and that is probably my favorite style. If not wood, then Titanium all the way.
edit: and just to add to this, I think stainless steel yoyos are underrated.
metal
(yes I’m a sucker for titanium too)
Machined plastic cuz it’s the best looking one.
Corduroy! Made a comeback in the late 90’s. I wore it so well, with J.J. Farmer shirts. I’m waiting for the next super coolio retro phase of marketing and insta fame to bring it back!
Psych, I still have corduroy pants and they are pizzimp!
Wood. Everything made from wood is better. Guitars, pencils, skateboard decks, pencils, cutting boards, furniture, golf club shafts…errr ok not everything.
