It has been a while since I posted something in this forum, I have recently just got back into yoyoing after a while and have gone back into learning more tricks, especially advanced ones. The current trick I am trying to accomplish is Eli Hops, I am finding some success in doing Eli Hops that go straight up in the air or to the right (I am right handed btw so try and kinda visualize it that way) but whenever I start doing Eli Hops farther to the left I always fail to land it back on the string and sometimes smack the hell out my hand that doesn’t have the string attached to it. I am trying to make the Eli Hops one fluid motion but I feel like that isn’t working either, is there anything that I am missing to land this trick, especially consistently?
i keep my nth a little lower than my th, then you just clap your hand to the beat
This is going to sound goofy and maybe you already tried, but practice with the yoyo not spinning. It may help you understand the feel of popping it up and brining it back to the string. Even if you don’t land on the string, not the point, you can start to gauge how fast or slow works for you and where the yoyo goes when you pop it and it falls. I know for me the closer I catch it to my nth the easier it is. I try to start pulling it toward my nth after I touch hands and it seems to give it a bit of help. Maybe this will help?
Keeping your non-throw hand lower can actually make your Eli hops harder if you are just starting out.
It gives you less time to react and do the motion, and also forces you to jump straight to a sharp-left angle. I would suggest starting with your nth higher, and slowly working your way down once you get faster and faster.
P.S. Wrap the string around your throw-hand a couple of times to make it easier to get your hopping-motion down.
If we’re trying to go to the left as the OP is asking, the NTH will start below the TH.
@Nnv1 it’s all in the timing. You’ll want to keep the string under tension at all times and mind this 90 degree angle throughout the throw.
On the catch, get your NTH as close to the yo-yo as possible without touching it.
String is always under tension!
GL!!
Just want to reiterate that string under tension part bc it is so important. You really want to be pulling the yoyo onto the string when you land. The entire trick should be tight with no slack forming ever. The trick was made with a responsive yoyo and practicing with a responsive for a bit might let you know if you are crushing that constant tension aspect or if you need to focus on that. If it returns, then you let too much slack form.
Also i agree w the extra hand wrap on throw hand to artificially shorten the string bc it is just easier to control the movement w shorter string.
Thanks alot for the help. About the wrapping the string around the hand thing, I am just confused about how exactly to wrap the string around my throw hand, is there a certain I should do to help or does doing whatever just work?
You are simply trying to remove some string length making things easier to control. Any method should work as long as you’re comfortable with it and it doesn’t create any interference
If you’re able to show us a video of your progress we might be able to help better. Are you making any headway?
