The reason I condescendingly refer to people as “little kids” is because its clear that they haven’t read the entire 7 pages of phooey due to short attention spans and general lack of interest.
I use a lot of forums…geared towards computers and guitars mostly and they all have closer to PG-13 rules on the forums regarding language and content. You can get away with a LOT more on the majority of forums. I asked a mod about this and they told me its because YYE has many users as young as 8 years old comin n going here. I also expect the median age of the readers and posters on this very thread to be about 15 if I had to guess.
Also I generally tend to be a jerk.
One fellow asked for some to cite my resources:
I made references to Donald Duncan buying a toy idea from a guy named Pedro Torres and then going bankrupt suing people. Which all seems very distasteful and not in the spirit of what YOYO means to me. This was one half my concerns (the other being pollution and factory working conditions) and I found most of the information regarding the lawsuit and bankruptcy at this website:
And again these concerns are why I do not take Duncan seriously. It doesn’t mean I think you’re a bad person for buying their products or buying a pair of Nike’s that where produced in a factory in China. I don’t have any hate for Duncan sponsored players either. I just simply don’t care for the corporate practices of Duncan and so I don’t really throw my support their way when there are other companies that suit me better.
Yes, they bought it from Pedro FLORES. They also made him incredibly rich doing so, and kept him on as a demonstrator, because he made it clear he’d rather teach than own the company. And did you expect them to just let another company infringe on their product, after they’d spent 20+ years promoting and building the brand? ANY company would do the exact same thing, and if you think otherwise, you’re crazy. You can talk about spirit all you want, but this is reality. And in the real world, if businesses don’t protect their product and/or intellectual property, then they go out of business. If that happens, everybody loses. The idea of not having respect for Duncan based on them trying to protect themselves from a business standpoint is absolutely ridiculous.
Thanks for providing the additional info about Pedro. I didn’t know he stayed with Duncan after the buy out as a demonstrator. I plan to do some more research on the Pedro Flores saga…any particular articles you would recommend or maybe just good old wikipedia?
Donald Duncan suing people is what resulted in his company going out of business. He felt that he owned the words “yoyo” which I learned from googling is a Philippine folk term. Again this is just my opinion…but that type of corporate greed goes against the “spirit” of what yoyo means to me. People will always jack other peoples idea’s…for generations bands have been copying The Beatles style…but thats just how art grows collectively (and gives birth to younger bands like Blur, Oasis, Spoon and a million others). When you fight this artistic flow of creativity (and shameless imitation) you are bound to go bankrupt.
I’m about done with this thread though. Its been informative but its time for me to put my energy into companies and topics that I actually enjoy.
I love a good fhz.I have six modded ones so far.I don’t know why ,but I just love to play with them.I also love my hayabusas and my pair of pink echos.I believe allot of their yoyos are contest worthy.I can just feel the duncan magic in every throw.
