I am sorry for the title but I had no clue how to make it more in topic for my question.
This weekend I was playing in heavy rotation with my ZGRT - Qi and Duncan GTR-JS and I noticed that the bind with the GTR-JS where a bit more “harsh” and immediate while the Qi it is more chill on bind and less responsive.
I noticed the same with different yoyos for example the Unprld - Recognition and the C3 - Cyber crash 2 where the cyber crash seems a bit harsher and responsive to the binds.
All this introduction to ask why those yoyos with same/similar gap width have such a different bind feeling and response?
In my case I use the same string in all my throw (monkey finger wines phat yellow) and same bearing (YYR DS platinum which are just amazing) and also the same pads (the black ones from ZGRT which I really like) and more or less all those yoyos get the same play time (I thought it was maybe the pads life but the GTR-JS get played daily from when I have it so it is the one with the most used pads in line with the Qi).
In case of the GTR-JS it comes with a gap of 4.62 mm which is the largest as all the other throw I mentioned stay at 4.50mm but between all those throw is the most “bind sensible” even more than the recognition and cyber crash 2.
I was wondering why, will be great to solve this “mystery” that I noticed!
You may want to consider adding a different thickness string to your game. I use kitty fat and Kitty regular for this very reason. On the grippier throws, use the thinner string and your good to go. I even use 100% nylon at different thicknesses to really dial in the bind on some throws.
Just because two different yoyos have a similar gap doesn’t mean they will bind the same. Shape, pads, bearing / responsiveness, material / finish…. There are so many factors at play.
every throw has a life of its own as we all know. I find that the string make-up and thickness is the easiest factor to alter.
You know something I feel like I noticed this weekend…I just started learning laceration and it turned out 3 of my bearings were slightly responsive so I had to clean them. After cleaning them it seemed like I was getting much snappier binds. Maybe because of spin time? I’m not sure.
different yoyo designs, different materials for response pads, gap widths, differences in MOI all contribute to how a yoyo moves through the air, and how it responds to binds. even string length can affect how binds feel
Yep to basically all of this. The more rimweighted a yoyo is the slippier binds will tend to be. Height and shape of the midwall, the design of the bearing seat, etc. All those matter in addition to just the width between the response pads.
The SF Bliss CS actually has a narrowed gap from the regular Bliss, because it was such a rimweighted design that their typical gap width proved to be too slippy for the design, so they needed to go more narrow than normal to get binds feeling like they wanted.
also I really love the fact that you play with the same string, pads, and bearings in all your yoyos. i do mostly the same, simplifies what I have to keep as spares LOL
Someone said to never change a team that win lmao.
I tried the YYR DS after all the advices here and I never gonna go back to other bearing, so I bought some for all the throw that I use daily, those bearing are just the best.
The string, I found the one perfect for my hands and my way to play so there we go never go back ahhahaha also same length all the time, about the pads I was used to silicone my yoyos but I get bored of it, I tried a couple different ones and when I found the ones I like the most then they ends up on all the throws
Guys thanks so much for all the answers this is very interesting for me, while I consider myself a nice player when it comes to how a yoyo work, behave and spare parts I am such an ignorant, I am learning a lot in the forum.
During my consideration, I did try with some “flying” binds, some combos and once just sleeper but I tried to throw at the same intensity and do the same things for every yoyo, but in the combos I notice most which yoyo is more grippier as many times I go against the rotation of the yoyo during a string trick.
Had no idea even the shape and the weight distribution can change the response also because as you can see I use the same stuff in every yoyo.
This post make me understand much, I was interested at the new Pheasant from YYFriends but I see that the gap is slightly smaller than the usual 4.50mm and was taking me far away from it (and it is not the first time that this happen) cause I really love really unresponsive yoyos and huge gaps and slippy binds never have been a real problem for me (I am the type of guy that play happy with very consumed pads)
