Cubing Corner

I should probably get a 6x6 actually. I’m going to a competition that has it.

I may have asked this before, but is there a certain time of year cubing competitions happen?

So do you guys memorize algos? Or just have an intrinsic understanding of the cube? I feel like my problem was following algos or whatever starting out, so i can solve the first two layers no problem, but getting the third is tough because I can never remember all of the different permutations. It seems like you really fast cubers aren’t even solving layer by layer but all at once? How does one get to that point? Can someone like Pineapple or you other guys point me towards resources that will help me better understand and think through solves rather than just trying to memorize steps? Thanks so much!

There are other more intuitive methods that I’m sure Pineapple or Stuart can recommend to you, but the thing about memorizing algorithms is that you actually don’t memorize them in your head, but in your muscle memory.

So you just gotta repeat the algs a bunch and it’ll come.

good to see you here Nathan! The method that most of use is cfop, which is an acronym for cross, first two layers, orient last layer, permute last layer. This is pretty algorithm based, but the last layer can be simplified to four relatively short algorithms, which is what I suggest you do for your last layer. Unfortunately intuition based methods for the entire cube, such as heise, are extremely difficult to understand and I wouldn’t recommend them. Badmephisto has a great website for this simplified last layer, if you want to look it up. Feel free to pm me with any questions you might have.

Yes! I highly recommend badmephisto’s site/video tutorials… By the time you can solve using CFOP you’ll be able to read about other methods and decide if another one might suit you.

Btw, I finally restickered, tensioned, and lubed my 5x5! It’s like a new cube!

id never re sticker 5x5 and up lol. I’m tempted to for my bochuang. The stickers are the only reason it’s not my main.

I’ve been putting it off for a while! I couldn’t stand the stock stickers anymore though. It wasn’t that bad once I got started.

it’s taking them off that I hate.

I’ve got this little tool that came with a Lego set for taking the little Lego bricks apart…

I found that the sharp edge on the end works wonders for peeling stickers.

Awesome thanks so much. Wish my cube wasn’t sitting on my desk at work while I was home haha. Ordered a few more today though so that’ll be nice. Checking out that site now. Thanks!

which ones did you get?

Currently have: http://amzn.com/B008U6V50U

Ordered:
http://amzn.com/B00IJZIXKM
http://amzn.com/B00YOTIZIM
http://amzn.com/B00JXCBWL2 (I just liked the colors, I don’t expect much quality)

Any others I should look at? I just looked for decent reviews + pleasing colors. Also stickerless. Hate stickers.

three yulongs?  You should try switching the pieces between different cubes.  That might look interesting.

Ha, didn’t even realize, like i said I just clicked whatever seemed to have ok reviews and/or looked pretty. Same way i buy yoyos usually, which is sometimes a disappointment lol.

That’s kind of funny. I usually would notice the name of the product I’m buying

you could look at a qiyi thunderclap and a guoguan yuxiao. Yulongs are a good cube though.

5.31 single. 21 move f2l and 9 move 3 cycle zbll.

Whoa, that’s really good.

Got my megaminx in the mail today! I ordered the Dayan with ridges but got it without ridges

You can see in the pic that the sticker on the box says “with ridges.” Oh well.
