For me, limit is based on funds. I’ve come across some hard times recently, and have only bought maybe 2-3 yoyos since May (excluding my Classic since it’s at a negligible $10). Compare that with any time before that when I was basically getting at least one high-end yoyo/month.
I do plan on picking up a pair of Loop 808s at IL States tomorrow.
Because it’s generally not a good idea, especially since you’re also mixing materials, brands, sizes AND bearings. You’ve got no consistency. I suppose if you’re compensating or adjusting to differences due to each hand having its own preferences, then I guess it’s good.
I’m an audio professional. I don’t have too much gear, I haven’t got enough cases and road racks!
The same mindset applies to yoyo. I’m already trying to find a good hard-sided case since my other cases are full.
Considering I’ve had to lose a very profitable business due to trying to fund my in-laws money pit of a business, I’ve got all the lee-way I need! When you dump in $2Mill and they wasted every last cent of it, you get “flexibility”! I also can’t grow the audio business until they pay me back, and they ain’t gonna pay me back, at least not anytime soon. Either way, I’m already researching consoles, lights, mics, outboard and other goodies.
I’ve had this same “you can’t actually use all of these” collection problem before. Shoes, watches, and yoyos specifically.
I decided as I had with the other obsessions that I’d eventually pair the collection down to a managable level. I was shooting for YYE medium contest bag full, and no more.
Then, like all the obsessions before, that didn’t actually work so I just said to heck with it. I went ahead and got a really nice, 7 tier display case from another site and my collection has already outgrown the combination of that and the medium bag.
I have about 18 right now. Most are doubles or Duncan butterflies. I find one yoyo and say, man that was great, lets get another one to go along side. I have 6 sets of doubles currently, but am likely to pick up another three butterflies.
My wife got on me about that same issue in regards to microphones.
Then, I was doing a show, and I decided during sound check that I picked the absolute wrong mics for the toms, swapped them out for something different. Night and day difference. Done similar things swapping mics out for vocalists. My wife no longer says anything when it comes to mics now.
I mean, I only have 76 channels on my console, 44 of them being mic inputs. SO, technically, I can only use 44 mics at a time. The question is: which 44 mics do I use!
(I also have 2 smaller consoles I can use as sub-mixers… giving me another 40 potential channels!)
Every time you talk about sound gear, I imagine this guy whose entire house is stacked with speakers and monitors and cables string everywhere :). My rig is two powered Harbinger 15’s and a Mackie 8 channel mixer with effects and two AT M4000s mics. I wouldn’t know what to do with a 72 channel board except maybe stare at it and scratch my head.
The more I consider my yoyo collection, the more I consider just getting more shelves. I actually like every yoyo I have. I like throwing them, I like having them around. Any creative shelf ideas, anyone?
And yes, the garage is full of gear. And no, you’re not even seeing a quarter of it, but you are seeing the full mains and console, but not outboard gear.
As far as getting back to yoyo cases and keeping collections neat, safe and organized:
Keep in mind a new Gnarwal and Puffin have just arrived. I haven’t even opened the USPS Priority mail box from YYE yet.
Keeping your stuff safe and organized is key to any collections. I like to keep mind in cases so my collection can be mobile, ready to roll and share at meets.
Since the Off-string case has nice “big” pockets in there, the case for it fit nicely. I’m having a hard enough time playing in regularly. No way I’m trying off-string with that!(yet!)
Open spots in the off-string case… must be filled!
A Cascade, A Chupacabra, and A Puffin ( On the way to my house).
Small but high quality. The only plastic I own is a Dragonfly, which I’m thinking about giving to my non-yoyoing friend who is interested. Remember, less is more.
I have a case that holds up to 24. I like the IDEA of minimalism in yoyoing, but I’m not sure the execution will suit me. Perhaps an experiment where I pack up all hit a few throws for each category and give them to someone for safe keeping for a period to see how it goes.
I’m likely making a bigger deal from this than it is, but I feel I’m at a point where my collection, nearing 30 yoyos, is large enough that I need to decide which way to go with it
