Pretty sure 100% of twins are maternal.

Twins can either be monozygotic (“identical” [AKA Maternal]), meaning that they develop from one zygote that splits and forms two embryos, or dizygotic (“fraternal”) this is because they develop from two separate eggs that are fertilized by two separate sperm.

Maternal in this context refers to the division inside the mother, not the fact that they are obviously insider her.

Maternal twins are the same as identical. Not all twins are identical. Identical, maternal, and paternal all mean the same thing. Fraternal twins don’t always look alike.
