I looked at those but like you said the 2 feet of movement may not be worth it
So the large monitor is on a kvm. The laptop on the stand is my work laptop and its screens only purpose is showing teams cause I like to stand while in meetings.
The laptop on the desk is my personal and its main function is editing videos for YYBC and 3d printing stuff.
They no longer sell that model HM. It was the predecessor to the Aeron before it came out. I haven’t a clue which model now as the kids kindly ripped the old tag off the chair.
Also working in a space with enterprise gear sounds like self torture but I did work a decade in datacenters and lose some hearing from that so my personal bias might be showing.
@megachicken289 I would love to see your (server) rack
programmer! i do a lot on the terminal so i like the vertical space for all that text.
i use a realforce 87u – just a fan of topre switches. from what i’ve seen, there are a few switches that have been released in the last year or two that feel kind of similar to topre so i may try those eventually
regarding the gesture, i’ve had it for 5-ish years now and have no complaints, but do not have any other chairs to compare it to other than the aerons at work. i tend to be less picky i think, and like adjusting my preferences to align with the product, e.g., with buying a new car or tennis racket or something, i’ll use it for a prolonged time and learn to enjoy their nuances. i am of the opinion that it doesn’t really matter which higher end office chair someone gets, as long as they spend the time to make all of the chair knob adjustments to conform to their body. good lumbar support is key
Which XPro and whats it rigged out with?
it’s just an x100s that i got back in 2018/2019
Very nice, I’ve been running an XT3 for years and just recently picked up an XH2s. Fuji is fantastic. Always keep my XT3 on my desk in case I need to run out.
No chair in frame but it’s a leap v2
I, too, am searching for a better chair for my office. The catch is I use an old geologists light table as a desk, which is tall even for standing height desks. Currently using a cheap drafting chair, and spend about equal time standing vs sitting.
Anybody know of an awesome tall chair?
Tbh, I’d still recommend them anyway, especially if you want an extra inch/inch-and-a-half of height, but you would have to be mindful of getting up, because even on that mat, if you get up too fast, the chair will fly through the wall. They even have a dual, smaller wheel set, but I’ve yet to try them, so I can’t offer an opinion either way
Now that’s a setup! I’m surprised you’re using laptops, but I imagine they would be perfect for a small space where heat buildup would be a concern as they are likely more efficient.
That explains why I can’t seem to find any results. It’s almost like HM scrubbed any references from the internet too. Not knowing the model might be better since it likely can’t be bought anyway (except used, I suppose)
It’s not ALL enterprise gear, but the enterprise gear is definitely the most noticeable, visually, audibly, and temperaturely
. In fairness to you, I have a lot of unique advantages that allows me to be relatively comfortable with it in the same room;
- I’m hearing impaired, so, despite still being noticeable at first blush, the sound quickly recedes.
- Additionally, my hearing aids are setup to stream audio directly from my computer
- Personally, the heat generated by my rig was actually a design choice as I actually enjoy the heat. My wife prefers lower temperatures, so it’s a functional space heater. (I do eventually have to move it out of the office once I’m able to get some cable drops throughout the house, so I’ll definitely miss my space heater once that happens)
I don’t have any pretty pics of my (server) rack on hand (pretty as in, good quality. My rack is actually a hot mess (pun intended) and as long as it doesn’t affect the equipment or their function, I’m going to keep it that way because that’s my preferred aesthetic (grungy cyberpunk). Feel free to ping me at around 7 if I haven’t posted any pics by then
@daosyn I knew it would be programmer, the terminal was a dead giveaway!
I appreciate your review of the Gesture. I agree that one should accept the nuances of their chair, but there still needs to be a good foundation to build upon, that’s what I’m looking for in my The One Chair
@MinerJ You can just get a stool conversion kit! That’s what I did when I bought my Leap from Crandall. You can also buy just the tall gas cylinder without the footrest (if that’s your thing)
Ooooh, I didn’t know those were a thing. Definitely opens up a lot more options. Thanks!
I’m sure you find them other places, possibly cheaper, but this is the site upon which I discovered this was a thing not too long ago and I got mine with my chair purchase, so didn’t need to look any further. I figured I’d try them out, see how it goes, and if it works out, I’ll keep it, if not, I’ll just buy a $40 regular replacement.
One tip tho, if, when you buy a new chair and decide to try out the normal height cylinder (Idk if this is specific to the Leap, or cylinders that Crandalls sources, or whatnot), but I’ve read that the extraction process might require a heavy duty 6"-8" wrench to pry the extant cylinder out of the seat.
Stool conversion seems like a bit much for my use case but very cool
So I have an older custom built system and an old Mac Pro in here but like you said heat is a major factor. I only pop on the big guns when absolutely necessary and it’s rare at best. I used to have an old server with dual Xeon processors in my office too with a quite mod on the chassis (larger fans and junk) but it was a power hog and I gave it away to a kid to learn on a while back.
Heck the monitors create enough heat to make it stuffy at times
For sure. Stool conversions definitely aren’t going to be for everyone. I only even entertained the thought because I’ve always loved taller chairs and was fortunate enough to have foreseen this possibility 5 years ago when I bought my standing desk. I’ve never personally had one for a sustained period of time, but I’m definitely willing to give it a shot, especially since regular sized cylinder replacements are effectively readily available. Worst case, if I don’t like it, I just suffer for another day or two until the regular sized one comes in.
yall got any a’them specs? (any/all specs you’re willing to offer)
I considered quiet mods, but tbh, genuinely not an issue for me. In fact, I’ve grown quite fond of the sounds my rack makes. I had to go into my office after the last hurricane’s power outage and walking into my office felt like I crossed over to a different dimension. Power, and proportionately heat (heat eventually less so once it’s relocated), has recently becoming a factor for me as well. I’m looking into turning some of my servers into more power efficient variants, but I prefer the rack aesthetics over a hodge podge of the now, currently ubiquitous sff servers (I also enjoy not breaking my bank).
Mini-rant
In my youth, I was always a “must have the newest everything, used stuff is gross and other people touched it.” kid. My rack is a monument to my growth as a better person and a reminder that just because it’s used/old, doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty or useless. Everything except my TrueNas server (which was the first thing in the rack) was bought used. Even most of my new (to me) hard drives that are hooked into TrueNas are referbrished drives. About the only thing I refuse to buy used is a daily driver phone, but that’s more to do with the battery than the appearance)

Honestly, if heat is an issue, upgrading the monitors to something newer (but not beefier) and thus energy efficient, might be worth it. All but my curved OLED monitor are relatively low heat producers, compared to a freely aquired old 19" Sony VIAO which I only used exclusively as a console for my server for a short period of time, was basically it’s own heater (I used to joke that it was my space heater’s (the rack) space heater).
Also worth mentioning, in the same vein as reducing heat, there are some pretty beefy usff pcs out there that cost (at the time of writing) half as much as a custom rig with the same specs. I’m actually considering giving one a go (not for heat, but to diversify my daily driver setup between gaming
and not-gaming
It’s a Leap v2 with the 3D Mesh on the back.
Happy cake day!
Ohh! 3D Bioknit? Any particular reason you chose it over the non-3D variant?
And how do you like it? Being both a Leap and from Crandall?
