Chronic Desk sitters; What chair y'all using?

With three kids and a live in parent I’ve lost my dedicated office. I need a door for taking calls and hate working in the same room I sleep in so the closet is where I went and it works surprisingly well

I spent a few years using our walk in closet at my old house as my home office as well, it does work pretty well. Other than mine didn’t have any plugs so I had to run extension cords.

I WFH and sit in a 1950s standard issue hardwood a**hatchet.

(Not shown, a little memory foam bum pad. I’m not that crazy.)

This looks like a form of torture

Mine also has no plugs and I run a long surge protector. Thankfully I have a vent so it doesn’t get too stuffy

Nice, mine had no vents at all lol. It would get so hot with like 2 computers and 3 monitors running in that closet.

I use a chair something like this one here:

It’s a fine chair and all, but I have scoliosis, and have come to dislike this chair very, very much.

I do not recommend it at all.

But look at the lines, man! And the patina! That thing’s got character.

This is the chair I put at the kids table at Christmas

Patina does not come over comfort but then again I sit a whole bunch

The old wooden desk chair is probably the best, no leather to wear out and no shock absorber “height adjuster” to wear out…

They don’t make them like they used to.

PS. I have decided that any chair I but, no matter the cost is good for a max two years. We live in a disposable world. :frowning:

I, too, have been on the hunt for THE chair… no luck yet! This one has been alright, though. Especially for a budget buy. Y’all have gathered some great advice here, thanks!

Done about 6 months working 8 to 9 hours a day in this chair, so far. I wouldn’t say it’s the most comfortable, but it isn’t causing me any pain [yet].

My old Herman miller does need a new hydraulic lifter but that part is relatively cheap and not hard to replace. Casters I’ll probably replace at some point too but 10 years of my heavy butt I’m surprised it’s not worse

Beware!!! I talk out of my Butt a lot, but I would like to point out the “Not So Obvious” by saying “The One Chair” does not exist, unless you build it yourself just the way you prefer it.

Try substituting yoyo tutorials for DIY videos at the School of Hard Knox, more commonly known as Youtube.

One might even consider custom molded inserts similar to Formula1 seating. Motorcycle seat fabrication videos would be another great resource for learning to cut glue shape foam or add gel inserts as needed. Custom upholstery videos as well.

Plethora of videos out there…Have FUN!

I like your office.

Casters and lifts CAN be replaced.

It is the faux leather that is the real problem. Once the leather begins to de-laminate, it is terrible both in comfort and especially looks. My chairs become so bad after a couple of years I am embarrassed to put them out in the trash.

BTW - Here is my latest. It is less than a month old, mail order from staples for ~$200.

Kind of a chair selfie with YoYo Expert on the computer screen.

Thank you! It’s been a constantly evolving work in progress

Agreed with @daosyn, that closet office looks hecka cozy. How does that wall mounted laptop fit into your routine? I assume is there for the standing position? Which specific HM chair is that? Google is only showing me cheap knockoffs.

I’m glad to hear another +1 for used chairs. I want to like HM, but all they do is mesh and I can’t stand mesh. Reason being, due to circumstances beyond my current control (soon to be rectified), I have a nearly full, half rack server decked out with well loved used enterprise equipment in my office; because of this, I’m usually unclothed, and thus bare mesh on my skin

@Nathan I’m excited to see another +1 for both a Leap and Crandall. Do you know if it’s the Leap v1 or v2?

@daosyn Gesture is not a chair I came across frequently in my research. Can you share your experiences and opinions. It’s always exciting to see another person with a secondary monitor in portrait mode. Researcher or programmer? Also Keeb deets?

@Captrogers @AudreySickburn We had attempted to convert our old condo’s walk-in to an office, even had a contractor add in an outlet. Definitely wish I had added vents, but it worked for what it was

@Errant.Giraffe  that’s certainly a choice of all time, even with memory foam pad, but unfortunately, unlike rich people, I don’t care if my furniture looks good, as long as its comfy to sit on. Basically:

@Snoopy Target sells basic, el cheapo office chairs that are definitely better than that AND gaming chairs. $35 buckaroonies

@Raindog3030 You’ll find it! If you’re okay with it, I would suggest looking at some less budget chairs and trying to find a remanufactured version, especially if you’re using it like a work chair. You should treat your work chair like a mattress, considering the fact that you’re likely in it for the majority of the day, like you’re on your back on your mattress for the majority of the night. Back issues and posture are not something you want to cheap out on.

@Captrogers I would say get some rollerblade casters, but I don’t think your small space would do them justice

@Astroyama In fairness, I realize my goal is lofty, but I’m willing to settle for As close to The One Chair as possible without going overbudget and maintaining my usual effort level (none to low-low). I do agree tho, I’m pretty sure the only way you can get The One Chair is custom made

@fos1 Honestly, anything less than real, upscale leather, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. If I was to go the leather route, which I absolutely will not because f leather, I would be more than happy to break my budget for real leather. I will say tho, I did sit in that chair and it was comfy, but I refuse to buy a chair where, when you recline, the seat comes up as the back goes down. Separate back and seat pan is a must. Wouldn’t even consider a chair where they are together
