Beginner needs advice: stick with OG Duncan Pulse?

Magic YoYo K2 Crystal is some real good bang for the buck, it keeps up with everything I throw at it

How do I tell whether a yoyo is meant for looping? Shape?

Yup! Narrow or “traditional” puck shaped designs are for looping, wider “wing-shaped” designs are for string tricks

Looper will be responsive and have super high walls, and imperial/ raider shaped like your pulse, string trick oriented yo-yos will have a butterfly inspired shape and tend to be unresponsive nowadays

YYE has a lot of examples of looping yo-yos:

As others noted, they tend to be narrow, have high, straight walls and smaller bearings (as in smaller than C or D). They are purpose built for that particular style, which makes them more challenging for most other styles.

Well it seemed responsive just now, I got some more good throws in that were high speed and now my hand is a bit sore from the impacts lol!

Edit: I’m having fun though, its crazy how addictive this is!

Oh wow that’s really kind!

I saw that there are tricks that you can do to change the tension, do I *need* to do one of those or can I let the yoyo adjust by itself by just letting it sit in a sleeping position but not spinning on the axle?

You can let it hang at the end of the string if you prefer.

I would suggest removing the string from your finger and letting the finger loop end hang, because the lower weight will allow it to accelerate and resolve the torsion much more quickly.

Edit to add: you should re-wind the string before attaching it to your finger, or you will add torsion back before you even get the chance to throw again.
