Bangarang and Le’Grange Delrin Rims Not Fitting?

Hey all, I’ve been meaning to make this post for a while—alas, life happened.

This is my method of fixing the issue of LBD Modular Delrin Rims for the Bangarang/Le’Grange not fitting onto your titanium bundle of joy tightly, and falling off at inconvenient times.

I have no idea how common an issue it is, just that it happened to both myself and a buddy across the pond, @LX_Emergency.

Considering how much better the Delrin rims feel and play in contrast to the 3D Printed ones (not that they’re bad—they’re not—the Delrin ones are simply a definite upgrade), discovering that they keep popping off every time you try to throw, can be extremely frustrating.

It certainly was for me. Being told I’d won one of their give-aways, and would be getting BOTH a Bangarang and a Le’Grange was a seriously awesome day! On mail day, I raced to the mail box, snatched up the package like Golum from Lord of the Rings, raced back inside whispering, “My precioussssss…” the whole way :joy:.

I ripped apart the package like a five year old on Christmas morning, hastily stringing and rimming them up. “Bangaraaaaaang!” Was my war cry as I let fly my titanium death star…only to hear the odd POP! of a Delrin Rim flopping to the floor.

I had realized earlier when I didn’t pay attention to the orientation of the axle in Bangarang BoomBox that, this was, perhaps, NOT “just like any other yo-yo.” so maybe, like the axle, I had simply put the rim on wrong.

I searched, and found no information other than to simply “press them on.” I sent LBD a message, and was told I was the first person to discover this issue with plain white, un-dyed rims—which is why they chose them, having never had an issue with white rims before. They were wondering if maybe the dying process was messing with the tolerances just enough to make the rims hold substandard.

After tinkering around for a few weeks, I finally stumbled on a fix out of pure frustration that was so simple I couldn’t believe it took me so long to try it. It’s simple, easy, and introduces barely any weight to the rims.

Required Items:

1. Your Delrin Rims
2. Scissors.
3. Measuring tape, ruler, etc.
4. Yo-Yo String—regular or thin works best and have both been tested.

Step 1:
Measure out 5 inches of your string—and cut. Repeat this so that you have two equal pieces.

Using YoTricks 100% Polyester here

Step 2
Pull the O-Rings out of your Delrin rims, and place one piece of the string in it’s place. It’s helpful to kinda snake the string in so that it naturally follows the groove. Repeat for the second rim.

Step 3
Push the O-Ring back into the groove, on top of the string. Firmly press the rim onto your throw. With the string under the O-Ring, it’ll take some extra muscle the first time. Once on, repeat for your second rim.

Voila!

Your Delrin Rims should now be as tightly, or very nearly, held on as your 3D Printed OST’s!

This has been tested extensively by myself and @LX_Emergency on both the Bangarang and Le’Grange. Drop, bump, and run-away 5A tested and approved!

I strongly recommend leaving the rims on for at least one week to allow the string under the O-Ring to compress evenly. This helps to break-in the new grip strength, and seems to reduce the already minimal (barely anymore than the rims themselves introduce) vibe. After one week, the rims will come off and go on easier than the first time, too.

NOTE: I want to give a BIG shout out, and an even bigger thank you to @LX_Emergency for his contribution in coming up with this. At the time, I only had the Bangarang, and therefore couldn’t be sure if it would work on the Le’Grange. I saw no real reason for it not to, but he’s the guy I went to and said, “I need you to test something…” :joy:. Without his help, the Le’Grange would have remained a question mark for over a month, slowly driving me insane. In a very real way, he had the other half of the answer.

Thank you for this information. I have a Le’Grange and enjoy it very much. I do not yet have a set of rims. I like the throw just as it is. I expect to order a set just to make it complete.

@FullSpectrumDad thanks for not mentioning me. But I don’t mind. I’m the buddy from overseas.

@Lathed_Back_Joel has been working with me to get this fixed for ages and he’s been great. He sent me white rims as well which did work. But before that he sent me a different set of dyed rims from the ones I bought and those had some of the same fitting problems.

I did the string underneath the O ring trick as well. But the fit was INCREDIBLY tight after that. Like almost impossible to get them on and off. (Getting them on was so hard that last week I punctured my thumb on the spike trying to get them on!)

And just a few minutes ago I had an epiphany. “Half a string” it sang in my brain.

I pulled the thin string I was using for this solution apart into it’s 2 component strands and used one half on each.

The fit is now PERFECT. Easy to click on and off and still tight enough that when bouncing it on the floor from 3 feet up doesn’t dislodge them.

Hope this helps. I love my Lathed Back throws. They’re truly among my favorite ones. And this has solved the one issue I’ve been having with them.
