1st Allon Chen
2nd Hunter Feuerstein
3rd Jakub Dolejs
I feel like Takeshis tech score being equal to someone who got 14th place is messed up. Also was surprised Hunters tech score was lower than Jakubs. Sorry to change the subject.
I am not a judge and I love Takeshi like truly the goat but yeah I feel like this is just a reflection of the way the contest was judged. Takeshi does have relatively a lot of setup time w his tricks where he is doing elements that do not click (to set up a dope slack or smt). He also has repeats in there where he is doing the same like opening and then does smt different out of it. Idk I think that his placement and tech score makes sense in the system they were using to judge the contest. I also think like w/e lol it was an amazing performance. Takeshi doesn’t like the judging system and definitely wasn’t playing into the system to try to win. The no hooks at the end was amazing and shows how he feels about comp yoyo lol
The whole crowd was chanting his name when they were announcing the winners and he was absolutely the peoples champion.
Also idc at all if you wanna have a sidebar convo about takeshis placement that is a different convo from the original topic. Yyef is mostly bst and releases and I am happy to yap about ppl yoyoing and judging whenever
That was great at the end when he looked like he was going to do a hook and then waved his hand haha. I agree about set up to do his tricks, I was also thinking maybe he didn’t jam enough tricks in fast enough. It’s just to me the quality of his performance was masterful overall which unfortunately doesn’t align with how the judging system works. His control of the yoyo on top of being in a high anxiety space is so good. I’m curious to see his semis tech score since he got first.
Years ago contests in the USA were pretty open ended in judging. Judges would kind of ‘click’ how they felt about tech, evaluation, etc. It was all just captured in the clickers - and at the time (early 2000s) a large emphasis at least in the USA was on rewarding more unique and innovative tricks.
As the judging system progressed and people started getting better at competing - the evaluation scores were created and over time awarding points trick by trick has gotten far more regimented. It is still up to the judge obviously but overall in most cases the scoring system does a really good job… I think with that trying to properly reward innovation and ingenuity in trick design has become more complicated and more difficult to reward as it doesn’t really live inside the clicker or the eval scores as clearly and that is really where Takeshi’s tricks shines above all.
I’m not sure what the answer is but I was really thankful he competed and we got to see what is probably the most impressive 3 minutes of technical tricks on stage I have ever witnessed.
