Here’s the cringe, “I was today years old when…”
After returning to yoyo over a year and half ago, I’m just realizing that I enjoy responsive play more than unresponsive. I’m much more casual in practicing than I was when I first resumed throwing, but when I do throw now, it’s mostly going to be 2A or modern responsive.
There was a quote I read from one of the old-school players (possibly Steve Brown, iirc) that’s stuck with me since I read it. It’s something to the effect of “Back in my day we played with the yoyo; now, people play with the string.”
Don’t get me wrong - 1A is what got me started into yoyo, and is cool in its own right. I think it gave a more obvious sense of progression with each trick conquered that helped me stick with it longer as a new player. But letting the yoyo do more of the work (response is what makes yoyos so unique from other skill toys, imo) is even more satisfying to me. So, a long overdue hello to my fellow 2A throwers out there!
