Take that bad boy apart to see whats up.
What I do may not be advised, but it works for me. I take all of my axles out, and put a very small amount of blue threadlock and torque down the axle fairly tight with my multi tool. I cant stand when the axle is all loosey goosey and inconsistent as to which side may be exposed when unscrewing them.
Also the bearing seat seems Extra tight on the Superstar. Easily the tightest of the few throws I do own.
Ive read that some needed to put theirs in a fridge for a bit to get the bearing out.
1- Make sure your bearing is clean, smooth, and ready for action. if not, clean it, or replace it.
2- Make sure that the bearing is seated perfectly level and not tilted at all in that tight seat.
3- Make sure the axle is tight and screwed in properly.
if you still have a noticeable vibe out of the box, I may add to possibly contact YYF.
Got box A, my wife said there are 4 yoyos. She gave me one till Christmas…blue TooHot! Awesome yoyo! I can’t figure out why there are three more, though. She wrapped them up and they are under my tree…sigh
I plan on breaking it in before changing anything, but…
I love the idea of putting a ceramic ball bearing in the Superstar.
What is the general preference between the Terrapin ceramic delta cut vs the KonKave ceramic?
(I prefer centering type bearings)
How about strong? I didn’t really care for the stock string, so I swapped it for one of the strings I’ve been using, which I bought off Amazon. I think the brand was called Infinite Illusions, and they’re polyester.
They’re decent, but I have issues with them slipping off my finger when I tie it around the middle finger segment, so I’ve had to keep them around the lowest/widest part of my finger. I ordered a package of Kitty standard and Kitty nylon to try out.
Here’s a question for the guys who actually own a Titanium Dream: Do you actually get $300 worth of performance, or is it just a cool/expensive novelty? I understand the design benefits of using titanium, but is it really that much better than a good bimetal?
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have been the lucky one to get one in the mystery box. Regardless of how good it is it’s just cool to be able to say you have a titanium yoyo. Because anything titanium is cool.
Terrapin make the best bearings IMO if you can afford them. My favorite is the Wing cut (looks flat, but actually is centering).
String is going to be a personal choice. Im madly in love with Toxic YellowJackets myself. They also are a but slippy on the finger. An easy fix for this is to not use the standard slipknot setup, but just tie a knot as the end like some strings already come. No loop, just a knot. Then Untwist the strings next to the knot and open them up like you would on the other end when putting it on your yoyo. Then take the string and pull it through the opening you just made by the knot. Use this as the slipknot. Note just make sure to use a tiny drop of glue (I use CA) on that knot so you dont throw it into a window if that knot ever comes undone. With glue, it will not. Its more comfy and faar less slippy.
Regarding the Ti Dream: it’s not a “novelty” in a trivialized sense-- the performance and feel are real. That yoyo is absolutely fantastic in the “lightweight but powerful pure V yoyo” category. It’s one of the highest-performance yoyos I own.
However, I suspect that even Ben would gladly say that if you pay 600% for the Titanium vs. an aluminum counterpart, you’re not getting 600% more performance. It’s impossible. Now, I know you’re not asking that, and nor are you expecting 600%, but you probably want to know if the performance difference is “significant”. I do not think it is. I have tricks that I can hit on my TooHOT that I can’t hit on the Ti Dream. The Ti Dream has it beat for weight:power, though.
So yes, it’s a “novelty” in a different sense of the word-- it’s something that’s fresh and fun in your case and that you’re really buying because it’s “a beautiful piece of Titanium”. It’s not worth the money strictly for performance. But it’s worth the money to own a beautiful yoyo that does perform well.
Uhhh… titanium isn’t even close to indestructible. It’s a fair amount weaker than steel. But it’s also lighter. So a pound of steel is weaker than a pound of titanium, but only because you end with more titanium per pound. Don’t get me wrong, titanium is bad a$$. But if pure strength was the goal, steel is the only way to go.
And I’m sincerely hoping you’re not paying $300 for a yoyo you can “drop a lot outside.” It’s way cheaper and better to buy a Shutter and replace it as need be.
The Ti Dream is intended as a collectible/showpiece, pure and simple, like all those fancy-anodized CLYW yoyos that no one has in stock (sadface). I was just curious if it was also /good/. And believe me, if I did have one I’d be showing it off to all my other engineer buddies at work.
I bought a bsp about 5 (?) years ago or so for that purpose and up until I lost the axle it was extremely durable. An aurora for the same purpose as well.
I know titanium is extremely strong. I’m not gonna be convinced otherwise lol.
When it comes to regular 1A or 5A (especially 5A), outside, over concrete, titanium isn’t going to break (ding, gouge).
I failed to see that this was purely about the ti-dream, and not all titanium yoyo’s. Ive been yo-yoing 9 years and done a bunch of outside shows, and yeah I can say titanium has had huge advantages for me.
Yoyo for a few years and destroy a few yoyo’s and your opinion might change lol. If you are a casual thrower and just like cool metal yoyo’s, yeah I wouldn’t recommend a dream.
The ti dream and CLYW’s are definitely not show pieces although some are collectible.
That said, ti vs 6061 aluminum is the comparison we are looking at here but ti is most definitely not indestructible. I have an abused Ricochet that can attest to that!
6061 in general is a pretty soft metal. Ask any RC car enthusiast about that. 7075 is a leaps and bounds improvement in toughness.
So let me ask you all this:
If I wanted a third metal yoyo - something completely different than either the Shutter or the bimetal Superstar - which should I get?
there are tons of yoyos that are completely different than those two. If you are speaking strictly yyf, try the horizon. If you aren’t afraid to spend some money, I’d recommend something really floaty. Maybe try the chief or something light. Maybe something undersized like the wooly marmot. Or how about something huge like the cliff.
Not saying stick to clyw(which isn’t a bad idea either). It’s just the first things that came to mind. There are lots to choose from. Just depends on what you want. From plastic to metal. A stable beast or a throw with float. Undersized to oversized. Completely organic shape or an exaggerated h/v hybrid. Pick one and enjoy.
Mine are players. I destroyed the collectibility of my Ti Dream the second I anodized it anyhow. But no, they’re players. Just because it’s not indestructible doesn’t mean it’s not sturdy. I’ll play my Ti Dream anywhere, any time.
I own exactly one yoyo that’s “just for show”, and that’s because it’s a lovely-looking Higby-painted Speedaholic. It cost me $20 USD as I recall. I don’t value the Speedaholic as a player (though it’s great!) but I value how awesome the art is. So I have no need to play it.
Metals. I like metals. (Although I was considering a loop 1080 and a flight just for giggles. Also a mighty flea. But I couldn’t justify the price of one for what it is)
the Horizon was one I was considering. I’d love one of the crazily anodized CLYW since they just look fantastic in addition to - as has been told - being good players. But as I’ve just bought a house, my budget is far more limited than it was 10 days ago…
