It feels remarkable though. If I have to change them once a month, it’s a cost similar to replacing string. At least that’s how I have it rationalized in my mind, as the feeling of cork response is likely the best responsive feeling on a return that I have ever felt. It’s all an eye of the beholder thing. The regular confusions feel fantastic too, but for $35, I highly recommend trying one. If you don’t like it, I’d trade you something cool for it.
You are correct about cork. Also, it’s like a lithium ion battery. It goes 100% all the way till the end and then it just dies completely. There’s no “worn” phase. But what @kretzschmar said is spot on. It’s the feel of the response. It is snappy as can be when you tug it but it really lets string slide well in the gap without snagging. That’s the place I love most of my yo-yos to be. Usually the same level of snappiness from silicone is snaggy on string tricks or if you get silicone to allow good string play it’s not quite a snappy on the response. Cork gives you both combined very well. It’s not that expensive to replace, the issue is they’re often out of stock.
Andy has some 3d printed pads that don’t wear down, it’s not cork, but I rather enjoy the feel of those and they last indefinitely (or at least way longer.)
Lately I have been playing fixed axle with cork pads, I really really like the feeling that, especially for moons
