You’re right and luckily the Aurora includes extra batteries so I happened to have some on hand cough
Good news! Replacing the batteries definitely helped. It’s still a bit dim on one side but it’s vastly better than it was. Big improvement!
Also protip – this was my son’s Kui and his grubby kid hands made the printing on the plastic sides start to wear off. I used a paper towel with some light oil to rub the rest of the plastic printing off, I actually think it looks better clear anyways!
I wonder how long batteries should be expected to last in these things? Particularly when sitting mostly idle. As you can see it is a CR 1220 button battery, I bought both Kuis around July 2018.

Oh also protip #2, unscrew the axle all the way out, then use the hex key included to push through the hole (from the bearing side) and poke the plastic cups out. Much easier.
The Aurora also works this way for removing the covers.
Glad they didn’t reinvent the wheel
