Yoyo Prices

Petty much. He noticed all of his yoyos were going for more than retail in the BST, and saw dollar signs.

Well, I think we shouldn’t forget that with a company that just recently posted about having some financial strain, it may just simply be necessary to raise prices to cover business expenses. But, any complete explanation about why prices are set where they are, not explained by the company, involves a fair amount of speculation.

I do think that a company being very popular in the BST could affect retail prices. But, to what extent, is speculative. Companies have to set prices accordingly, after all, they do not make any money from these very popular BST transactions.

Companies like CLYW are kind enough to offer a Fool’s Gold line of yo-yos, for those who want to try the brand, but cannot afford retail prices (or just refuse to pay them). When CLYW releases Fool’s Gold, One Drop releases solid Benchmarks, and YoyoFactory releases the Shutter and other budget priced metals, we have no basis to complain about yo-yo prices. It just starts to look like people lusting after something they cannot afford, while refusing to be satisfied with great playing lower priced options.

TA’s pretty much hit the nail on the head. There are plenty of great budget throws that make it affordable for just about anybody to enjoy the hobby and even compete if that’s what floats their boats. Higher end throws (A-grade CLYW, YYR, most One Drops, etc.) are very much luxury items. If you can afford them, power to you! If you can’t, it’s not the end of the world. Most throwers with huge collections are more than happy to let you try them out at meets.

I woudnt really compare Fool’s Gold to other budget models from One Drop or YYF. Both OD and YYF took some time and research into these yoyos into how to make them cheaper. And these models are always available on market. Fools gold are available just few times a year and are just somehow problematic B-grade models, which would otherwise end up laying on shelf or sold at some contest with discount.

Also selling B-grades online is damaging sales of shops that carry these yo-yos. You can notice that almost no other manufacturer does that.

Ehh, I’ve seen YYF sell “B-Grade” throws, and G-Squared calls them “Glitch”

I know this is only 2 examples, but still…

But I think YYF sold them only at contests(and maybe in some mystery box?)

SPYY used to throw out ‘star’ grade throws, YYR dumped a tonne of A- grade throws in mystery boxes last year (granted, that was a spectacular one off), and C3 offer b grades from time to time as well. But no company offers b-grades with quite the same frequency as CLYW.

YYF Mystery Boxes were not b grades, just old models that didn’t sell.

Well guys…then there are the General Yo B grades that play like A grades haha. It really is interesting to note how each company deals differently with B grade product. There are so many different ways of achieving that, and I think we should be appreciative when they discount them and make them available to us. CLYW certainly does that, and there are a lot of people who appreciate that option. I see them give notice when Fool’s Gold will be available, so if people are paying attention, and really want one, they seem pretty accessible.

I really appreciate what YoyoFactory has done with the Pro Packs and mystery box sales recently. Also the price of the Shutter and other value models. These companies often make their goods more accessible to us where price is concerned, but it requires our patience and being ready when the opportunities arise.

Yet, some will never be satisfied, and look past the value models (despite the vast variety), as they continue to lust after the throws that are not financially within their reach. I have bought the spectrum and can say that a higher price certainly does not determine how much you will ultimately enjoy the yo-yo. People want prices lower, when lower priced yo-yos already exist. Variety already exists at every price range.
