Yoyo CAD & Prototyping Adventures

Mark and palli both own their own yoyo companies. Generally what happens is when you have a design you really like you can pay for a machine shop to make them for you, like FPM (yoyofriends) Magic yoyo, One Drop, etc.

Homer is in his investigatory process right now… the way i see it, the world is flooded with yoyos… any yoyo and every yoyo. and, discussing with some of my peers, maybe could there be something different? I don’t know… Homer is asking questions… but, before you set out to make a yoyo, ask these questions, because i was…

  • what is your yoyo going to do?
  • is your yoyo meant to/going to fix a problem? is it going to change something?
  • why should people by your yoyo? what is going to set your yoyo apart from every other yoyo?
  • are you planning on profiting or breaking even on this endeavor? or, if you are ok with losing money, how much?

there are several other questions, but those are for me

i feel like imma get these wrong, is it the One Drop Dang and the A-RT grail?

Yep, check out Products – tagged "MK1" – YoYoExpert for mine and Reykjavik Return Tops – YoYoExpert for Palli’s design.

There’s a lot in here that hasn’t/won’t get produced, but that’s the nature of exploratory design work.

Yup! Honestly I feel like the final version of the Ragnarok was a bit too rushed. They play absolutely amazing and I still consider it one of the best competetive monometals on the market so don’t get me wrong but I honestly didn’t put enough thought into how to make it stand out from all the other releases out there resulting in slow sales. Solid colors with no engravings is definitely not the way to go if you are a new manufacturer.

My newer designs have more thought behind them on how to capture the eye of buyers as well as being amazing players. I’m really proud of my new yoyo, Mjolnir and I can already see a lot more interest in it because of my aesthetic choices.

you got them engraved?

Yessir! The symbol on it is a Triquetra which is commonly represened on Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor in old Nordic scripts. It’s meaning in old norse is still unknown but it’s said to possibly represent Asgard, Midgard and Utgard. When the Viking’s converted to Christianity they still wore the symbol to represent the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

Yessir! that is awesome. the engraving looks amazing.

Also since this is the CAD thread I realised I never posted the CAD for it on here. They came out absolutely perfect!

looks like a really fun throw! is it a Bimetal?

7068 aluminum with Stainless Steel rims.

That gap looks really wide, like 5mm.

On my yoyo? Flats on renders make it seem wider than it is. It’s actually 4.56 which is slightly less than the 4.6 a lot of people are going with.

I love how you’ve been leaning into the theme and really tying it all together. It looks great!

I designed this today. A V shape with a little H thrown in there for flavor. Kinda looks like a baby between the puff adder and warbird lol. 52x43, 4.5 gap. Weight would be between 60 and 62 grams depending on 6061 vs 7075. Definitely more of a fun design as its so light and on the smaller side.
