This is a first run 28s CLYW Sasquatch (still has the hand poured silicone in it in great shape, also has the box.) Has one scuff on the outer rim, not a ding and can’t be felt. It is smooth and doesn’t have vibe, which was rare back then on old CLYW.

I love it, but my goal is to turn it into a Peak (even if the Peak is in rough condition.) If I find one in good condition, I know I’ll need to add cash, just trying to find out how much before I go hunting and negotiating.

Those educated on old CLYW, I would love a value estimate.

The $330 MIP Sakura FHZ sold around 5/1/21.
There was another MIP one that sold not long after on 6/10/21 for $199 in a buy it now auction.

@MattC Because of the flawed cap I would value it around $150-175. Even after release you just didn’t see that many around. If I remember correct there were only 75 produced with some of which given to team members, and the rest sold at a store in japan.

I’ve been curious: how would you go about pricing prototypes of yoyos in general? Are protos more sought after? I understand there could be a lot of factors that may change how a price of a proto may look in comparison to a production run, such as brand/model significance, condition, material, etc. How do they usually compare?

Thanks, that’s more than I was expecting. What about these guys?

I don’t think that a lot of collectors pick up protos so, most of the time, they go for less than what a non-proto would. I think it depends a lot on whether or not there is a recorded history of a prototype. Without that, it’s hard to prove the provenance of a yoyo (or that it’s not a bad fake).
Some protos are officially recorded. An example, the proto Sturm Panzer Stealth Ogre is listed alongside the regular models on some yoyo shops and the Sturm Panzer website. But that’s a weird case, since the proto is actually labeled with v1.0 and the non-proto is v1.4.

@YoYoExpertGarrett

You guys got some leftover stuff lying around and preparing to make a BST thread?

Nah just curious. :grimacing:

I would actually expect even more than 350

Probly could go for 450 and I could see it going even higher on eBay

I 100% agree, there are a few folks that would be eager to compete to get one.

There’s not a good formula for assessing a proto’s value. As @SpinJoel said, they tend to go for less than the full-run model, with a few exceptions. If it’s a desirable model from a desirable company, a proto can fetch quite well; CLYW’s Teal Peak is a great example of this - only two were made in teal/white instead of the typical blue/white the rest of the 1st run Peaks were. I’d suspect a Teal Peak would fetch quite a pretty penny. I believe @mrciurleo had one at one point; I wonder what he paid. Likewise, I have 1 of 4 prototype CLYW Avalanches and I’ve had multiple $500 offers on it over the years, despite the Avalanche never being a particularly ‘hyped’ model. On the flip side, @tucker.holland used to have a prototype Puffin 2. I believe he picked that up for about $75. So it’s really a case-by-case thing.

Looking at New Releases right now, Top Yo has a new model out called Time Jacker. Would anybody pay an exorbitant price for a prototype of it? I highly doubt it.

I still have the Teal Peak, believe I paid $525 for it at the time. To echo your post, protos of major yoyos may fetch a pretty penny, but for the most part any run of the mill proto won’t be worth much.

Not sure if the preproduction Punchline that was red with a silver splotch in the middle is considered a prototype, but that would be worth a pretty penny and wasn’t a production run.

Unsure if it had any changes made prior to production is why I say all that.

I’ve got about two dozen prototypes, mostly from YYF but some from other companies. I think one of the main factors in pricing a prototype is the success of the eventual run. A prototype of the YYF Shutter would be worth more than a prototype of a YYF Canon for example.

Another factor is how unique the prototype is. I’ve got a YYF Boss (original design) prototype with a hubstack that I’ve been told is the only one ever made. I’ve had offers of over $250 for it, but I’m not inclined to sell.
