I wanted to bring up a little topic just because I’m noticing something about yo-yos. How much can you really design a yo-yo to be different from another that hasn’t already been done that would make it different than something that’s already on the market.
To me they all look the same. I’m sure some play better than others but to me the designs and themes are really boring. You know you get solid colors or you get splash or you get some lines that go through it or you get something that’s called something and there’s like a little logo on it. I have yet to really see a yo-yo that has a really cool design or theme and I get it. Nobody buys yo-yos for that but it would be cool to see something new and different. As for themes and stuff and colors.
But back to my main question is with so many yo-yos on the market, how can you make one better than the other or is it basically stale at this point and everything is going to play about the same.
The reason I kind of asked this is because I see some people here that have a large very large collection. I’m talking 50, 100, 200, 300 yo-yos but at what point is having a large collection like that? Making no sense because not all of them are going to pay completely different. You might have a few but then you got 50 yo-yos that completely do the same exact thing to just different color. So at what point is it a waste if they all perform the same.
Collecting is fun, it’s magical even. To open a box with a new piece of metal that fits in your pocket and you give it that first throw and sometimes it feels like oh boy this thing is doing the tricks all by itself while others have a feeling that you have to work at it. They are all very different to me. Some I hold dearly to my heart and others are just plain beautiful.
There are yo-yos with intentionally unique designs, but addressing those that may seem redundant, the differences are sometimes subtle but they can certainly be there. The further I push my skill level, the more I can perceive them.
But I believe that some yo-yos get made just because a person wants the experience of making them. Proving that they can do it and/or making a yo-yo that other people enjoy playing or just owning is enough. I am sure people buy yo-yos just to support that (because I do it frequently). It doesn’t matter if the yo-yo is better than anything else, because the motivation to design and buy is personal.
Maybe they want to contribute to the community in some way, and making a yo-yo is a way to do that. Or its is a way to generate funds to support events or sponsor players.
Whether the next yo-yo is a significant departure or upgrade over everything similar is kind of moot anyway. Few if any brands have 100% market saturation, and some extremely popular yo-yos never get made in enough volume to meet the demand. Especially if they remain highly sought after for years of new people entering the market. And not every brand is interested in meeting demand for a certain style or performance profile at every price point.
Because a lot of them don’t perform the same? They’re all distinct from each other. They can be similar, but having variety is a great thing so that you can find something that fits you perfectly.
Many are cool projects or oddities. Some are sentimental. A few are exciting unique designs and there’s the occasional hype driven buy. Idk I like shiny metal trinkets and enjoy owning some more than playing them while gravitating toward others as just good feel throws that I enjoy playing often.
do you only have one writing instrument in the house, or do you have a pen with blue ink, one with black, maybe one red. perhaps one is a fine tip but maybe another is a roller ball. maybe you even have a caligraphy set with a fountain pen. got any pencils? got a marker or two, and maybe one’s a sharpie? why, isn’t it just a waste since they all write?
With so many languages in the world, how can one be better than another? Or is it basically just stale at this point and languages are basically the same?
