So I tire of living in the shadow of the early “good” 888, I have two 888x, and I would like to track down an 07, 08, 2011 “classic”, or whatever is considered a proper 888. I enjoy my X’s, so I’m really curious what I’m missing.
Forgive me for tagging, but I know both @kawaii.kaede and @pyrotechnic seem to know a lot about these, am I on the right track? Are there other more easily attainable models that will fit the bill of the “true 888 experience”? Thanks in advance!

if you’re looking for play, just get a reissue of the 888 available on YoYoExpert now.
They are exact replicas of (2007 I think?). But an early year before the 888x regardless. Apparently there was a fair amount of variation in runs back then, and they chose the reissue to be what they felt was the best example.
This is why I never understood the continued collector hype around early 888s justified by playfeel.
If you want one that’s old because it’s rare and valuable, totally get it. But completely unnecessary if you want to feel what it would be like to play one back in the day.
Wow!!! I figured they’d have minute differences. You know, fractions of grams. 6, 7 grams differentials is pretty substantial! Wow, I never knew. I mean, after throwing a bunch, I knew there was a difference. I just never thought it would be so large of one.

I do not like new 888 china clone. idc if it make in USA or 15 year old. it just don’t play like 07 888 the design is not same as 07 888. profile is different. idc what some of you may say or what yyf may say about this. if new 888 clone play anything like 07 888 I would sell all my 07 888s and enjoy $3000 vacation. I don’t like 07 888 to collect I like for how it play and feeling

07 888 best playing by far , perfect in between
if I had to own only 2 888, it would be 07 888 (non highwall) and 09 888 both large bearing = one light and flowing, the other heavy and powerful
the small bearings are fun if you own 10 888s and want something fresh , but not a quinticential 888 experience
Chris show the width, heigh are different but all 888 profile are very different - along with design and weight distribution. I would take photo, but I am in Asia atm and 888 collection use. for most year of 888 : some of high wall, some have low wall, some 6061 , some 7075
important detail about 07 888 it only one to have CNC machine DELRIN hubstacks, which make It some far superior quality. Delrin hubstack are much heavier, and the 07 888 design for this center weight - not IM stack. it also makes it premium much more. The softer delrin plastic soak up more micrvibration compare to injection mold hubstack and make 07 888 have much more “butter” feeling.
