Wooden Yoyo Making Masterclass with Spinworthy- Shear Scraping

I recall a convo about this between Glen, Charlie, and Eric, I think. I’ll see if I can find the link.

This has a lot of great info

@Pun1sh3R if you’re lookin’ to buy a lathe and all the tools we talked about in the above chat let me know. Me and the lady are moving and I’m going to need to let go of it pretty soon. No pressure though. Figured I’d just put it on OfferUp or something when I get around to it.

I have a question im new to yoyo making (or making anything in general) so forgive me if I ask a stupid question but theoretically If take a piece of wood and carve (with my hand(is that possible)) it and buy an axle would that be it

Yes :man_shrugging:

You can hand whittle yoyo halves. It might be hard to get something good and balanced but if you’re a talented whittler it’ll probably be fine. The woods that tend to be good whittling woods tend to be on the soft side which might lead to a less durable yoyo.

I guess if by carve you just meant “cut” then it is feasible to do that same with hand tools or power tools.

For axles I tend to use either 1/4” or 5/16” dowels. Again, hard woods preferable for durability, but soft woods preferable for ease to work with.

yees ive recently got into turning yoyos,
Ive also found having nice sharp tools helps get a cleaner finish. though most of my tools are not very sharp lol.

I also wanted to ask you what you like to use for finishes on wood yos? and where you get / how to make those plastic blanks?
