About the Chief, I have one. I traded for mine (and very heavily I might add) and it lives up to the hype I think, though I wouldn’t pay the 150$ price for it.
I think its simple, he’s got this niche in the yoyo market cornered and is capitalizing. He could probably charge 200$ for them and they still would most likely sell out in five minutes. As it was previously stated, its not a bad business strategy,
It just sucks for those of us with bills to pay.

Regarding people valuing their time:
It we depreciate the cost of the yoyo over the expected or actual usable lifetime of the yoyo(within the hands of a reasonable person using it), the yoyo actually is in fact very cheap A $200+ Turning Point Positron can quickly drop to under $5/month or more when factored in this way.
Even so, there’s that up front sting that people have a hard time getting over. I don’t have a problem paying $200 for a yoyo. I won’t right now, but I could.
What I paid for the Chief is between me and the private person who sold it to me. I feel I am getting a fair price. Of course, CLYW stuff used to be less expensive and the price jumps recently reflect a changing trend in the yoyo industry. I do honestly feel stuff is bring priced more where it should be. What sucks is that means prices are jumping up.
Even so, I can still enjoy my DM2 as much as my Gnarwal or my Chief or my Solaris or Albatross or Royale(for a few examples).

not to beat a dead caribou, but i also hope people understand, making these threads only increases the hype (to some degree). even though it may not be entirely good hype, your adding to the sense of allure and exclusivity…
but i didnt come in here to argue economics…only to say that:
i paid 135$ for my first run chief. this is the best yoyo i have ever owned, period.
ive paid 165 for a couple more chiefs since then, still no regrets, and i will buy more chiefs in the future. if youve played and really enjoyed chiefs, you know they are worth more.
but that can be said for almost all things truely enjoyed by the end user… eye of the beholder concept.
edit: if it hasnt already been mentioned, i think the age demographic is one of the the largest factors to “x yoyo is too much money” in the yoyoing community… 140+ is a whole lot to a young teen, and not such a great amoutn to somone 25+, that has to pay real bills… just sayin.

Say what you will about the price of the “Chief”, but I have always considered it my Desert Island YoYo.
If I could only own one throw, It would be a Chief. ;D

It’s because they can make it any price. You can find them in BST for cheaper though. Also, they were selling them for $80 at PNWR, the regular ones.
The $80 Chiefs at PNWR were Fools Gold though I can’t really figure out why mine became a Fools Gold.
Ive had 2 chiefs and will be getting a third soon, IMO there one of the best, if not the best for the price. The colors are fantastic and bright, and they play brilliantly. But when looking at the first run price of $135, and now up to $165 just for a different color splash, this is milking the cow a little too much. I would say $145 would be the max for the colors there kicking out. I mean adding $30 for a splash is too much.
It also makes me think how much the arctic circle will be if they go through with the 2nd prototype. My first thought of the Chief was an avalanche with more center weight, this said months ago, and now looking at the AC proto, thats exactly what it is! lol, I have a feeling the AC will be stupid expensive. which is a shame…I hope it isnt because the Ava and Chief are my top throws, so I am excited about the AC.
