In my mid-20s I started playing unresponsive. Every time I bought a new yo-yo, I told myself that I needed to learn a new trick in order to justify it, and so I did. I don’t know exactly how many tricks I knew at one point. but it was enough to pick up a yo-yo and have fun for a couple hours. One day I saw a slack trick on YouTube that looked pretty cool, and I thought I should be able to learn it no problem. Aspects of the trick were much more difficult than they seemed. And while I eventually got to the point where I could land it, sometimes I could never master the trick. And so started my descent into madness. I focused on the trick over and over and over for hours. It’s all I could think of and it’s all I could do when I picked up a yo-yo day after day, week after week for over a year. And I couldn’t get it mastered, I could barely land it one out of 10 tries and I completely fell apart. Over the years, I pretty much forgot all of the other tricks that I used to know. I had to start from the beginning. Promising to never try that trick again. I had to learn the simple all over again. And it was fun again I was learning and landing tricks just like I used to. I suffer from mental illness. I’ve been combative and rude with some people on here (I truly am sorry if I upset you) I hate it cause it’s not the me I know. My main objective here is to be positive and connect with other people who like the same toy. Will I get locked into another trick and sell all my yo-yos? I hope not but maybe. So here we go again. Time to buy one and learn one!
You have inspired me to give up on reading the last 1/3rd of Magic Mountain. Who knows what good stuff I’ve missed out on reading forcing myself to get through 400 something pages of horribly dry translated German that’s hardly went anywhere… I’ve punished myself enough.
Oh, I guess it’s too long. Sorry, it didn’t seem that long when I was writing it.
However long you all want to post, I promise you can’t be as unnecessarily wordy as Mann’s “Magic Mountain.” Totally over all the goings on in an early 20th century TB center in Germany…
That’s an interesting story. Glad you’re back to having fun with it.
Oh, I guess it’s too long.
It wasn’t long, at all.

Sort of similar situation here. I have been trying, for years, to master this rejection hook thing. No idea what it is called or where I saw it. All I know is.. 1.5 mount, roll counterclockwise over NTH thumb, reject, hook back into 1.5. I think it sort of de-railed my natural progression in some way that I can’t exactly explain. Wish I knew where I even saw it, or the name of it, so I could watch more tutorials on it and finally master it. Can hit 10 beef hooks in a row but can’t hit that godforsaken 1.5 rejection hook thing.
Never quite quit yoyo’ing, but after 20 years, decided to start again from the basics – learning from the beginning of Rewind’s trick database. It’s been a lot of fun. Also helped me realize how many tricks I have forgotten. It’s been a reawakening of sorts.
It’s awesome we both ended up getting back into the hobby around the same time. I liked the chats we have had in the past and I remember sharing interest in certain brands. I enjoyed having you as a friend back then and I’m glad we can reconnect.
We’re still friends and I’m glad to see you back on here too just like the old days
