Why do people think plastic yoyos hurt less than metal?

Happy cake day!

I think that metal yo-yos would hurt more if there were dings on it.

Just got some metal loopers which are about the same size, shape, and weight as typical loopers. Expectedly, metal hurts quite a bit more than plastic.

edit:unexpectedly>expectedly

I’ve wondered about this too. I haven’t ever been able to find any information explicitly regarding the injury risk of metal vs plastic.

But looking at real world use cases, baton/plastic bullets are used (controversially) as a means of crowd control. Presumably, the plastic is used to make the impact more blunt due to the much greater elasticity of plastics vs metals. So a plastic, in a much slower yoyo collision, should be able to disperse its energy at least as efficiently. Of course, there is a lot less energy involved in the yoyo scenario so the difference might be negligible, even if it exists.

Anecdotally, I’ve only ever broken skin once (classic eyebrow laceration) and it was with a very light bimetal Sturm Panzer Leo Sniper Mk2 on a sticky bind. Those sharp stainless-steel edges look so nice but they must be respected.

I give my son a rubber Duncan first yoyo because it 100% hurts less than metal or plastic. I also feel like my oracle is softer than other plastic yo-yos but I might just be imagining it.

Because they do hurt less. Getting hit by my Valkyrie hurts like an SOB but getting hit by my Plastic Fulvia is nothing
